Location: Poynette WI. | I recently purchased a 300ej for my brother and we just broke it out the other day. I asked to take a few casts with it and noticed the drag was fully engaged but i could easily pull line out. I also have a curado 200ej in the boat that when the drag is set full it's fairly difficult to pull line out, alot harder than the 300ej. Can someone else that owns a 300ej let me know how much effort it takes to pull line out when the drag is tighten all the way down. Just to be clear, we did not crank the drag down as hard as possible, just as tight as we do all our other reels. I just want to know if this is a reel i should send back to Throne Bros. under the 90day warranty or possibly send it to Pikemaster. Thanks. |

| Should be pretty tough to pull the line out. The line could be spinning around the spool if tape or mono backing wasn't used when the line was put on. |

Location: Poynette WI. | I'll check that again but, not sure that's whats going on. Pikemaster said to put some carbon washers in it and i'm all for that, i just feel like there is something else going on with it. |

Location: Quebec, Canada | I remember reading something here about the 300EJ's brake being a lot less strong than other reels... maybe it had something to do with the quality or quantity of the washer or something along these lines.. |

Location: MN | It's a brand new reel. Not likely it's "broken." Shimano makes excellent products. Typically you will find that when gear breaks it is due to neglect or matched inappropriately to what it is being used for>> Burning 10's |

| Did you start the spool with a mono first? I have a 300ej and the same thing happened to me until I started with mono and now it works perfect. My line was just slipping on the spool. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I wouldn't think the baits thrown would have any effect on the drag. As others have said, I'd check to make sure mono or tape was used first to make sure the line isn't spinning on the spool first. If you feel comfortable, you could also take the reel apart far enough to take the drag washers off to clean them and make sure they don't have grease or oil on them.
After doing that, there might be something going on with the reel if the drag doesn't improve. |

| Curado 300's simply have weak drags. I can lock mine down and set the hook on a double 10 and the drag will slip. That's on both a 300e and 300ej with carbontex drag washers. |

Location: Poynette WI. | I understand they have weaker drags, but this one is alot weaker than most right out of the box, I'm going to double check that my brother added mono backing before filling the spool, he is using super slick power pro line i believe which seemed very slippery to me. Hoping this will be the problem and easy fix. I'm also having a reel repair tech add some up grades if possible. Thanks everyone for all the imput and advice. |

| Shimano lists both the Curado 300 and Calcutta 400D with 15 pounds of drag, so I wouldn't think the Curado drag is any weaker. I checked mine and could lock them down tighter than I would fish with on normal circumstances. Like others mentioned, it could be the line slipping on the spool or perhaps the drag washers need to be replaced.
If you want a really heavy drag, the Tranx has 25 pounds of drag.

Location: Poynette WI. | I found out last night that he did not put any backing or tape on the spool first, he just tied a knot, i've never delt with line slip before, maybe because i've always put my line on correctly. so I'm going to take the line off and put it on myself and see if this the problem.. Thanks everyone for the input, i'll let you know what happens. |

| Kinda figured that was the issue. Easy way to see if this is the problem is to mark the edge of the spool and then pull line out. If the line comes out and the spool stays still, it's slipping. Easy and cheap fix on a great reel. |

Wow, based 100% off my personal experience with Curado's and Calcutta's I would never believe this, but according to Shimano's specs for each reel they have equal amount of drag power. Curado seems so much easier to pull line out when locked down compared to a Calcutta. To the OP, glad you found the easy fix.

Location: Yahara River Chain | Just got a 301e and the drag works well enough that I cut my hand with the braid trying to pull it out in full lock down and never moved the spool. If you need it locked down tighter, you had better have everything else in top shape of else you break off the fish or break your rod. |
