Posts: 441 | The "glory days" are gone. No more 100 fish tournaments, anymore... Just like the "glory days" on Vermilion, and "The Big Pond". But, I'm grateful for the days we have, now.

Posts: 246 | How about Tippy? No oxygen killed the shad I presume due to heavy ice ?Muskies may have perished as well? Any conformation? Thanks and sad news. Gmanny Edited by gmanny1 4/14/2014 9:06 PM

Posts: 72 | Fellas relax. It was a very cold winter and after cold winters you always a have a good amount of shad die off, but remember the reason they stocked all of these lakes is because there is a #*#* load of shad in them. The shad and musky population will be just fine . Granted the good ole days of Indiana muskies are gone but this is still and will continue to be a great musky fishery. I have seen more big fish in my boat out of these waters in the last 4 years then I have in a long time . 50 follows a day, and 10 in the boat . Yeah those days are gone. Its real musky fishing here now . Put in your time , change up some of your tactics and you can still catch some great fish from these waters. Trust me , they are still there.

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | Shad will die during a hard winter and keep dying almost untill musky spawn. As Steve Pallo explained it to me, they shad starve and they digest their insides. They die over a long slow period. It seems to mostly affect the largest shad from what I have seen. What it does is makes that prespawn bite very difficult. Muskies don't have to chase a meal. I have literally picked up full size shad upright in a school with my bare hands just after ice out.

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I will agree with the above post... People are always in love with a lake when it gives the angler "a false sense" of musky fishing. Sure back in the day catching 3-5 a day was the norm...and seeing sometimes 50-100 follows a day happened...but that IS NOT MUSKY FISHING...back in the day, you could fish open water with rubber, fish shallow with topwaters, fish the breaks with gliders...and EVERY boat was coming in contact with fish...those days are gone and now it is MUSKY FISHING. I still enjoy our little ponds and the fish it spits out...they are still great fisheries. Just last march, I boated the biggest fish I have ever seen in Indiana....there are hot times and there are slow times, just like any lake. It's no longer a place that anyone with a rod can just show up and catch fish. You have to have an understanding of the fish, water temps, shad locations, oxygen levels, etc...then it all comes together. These lakes are still loaded with fish and still spit out a ton of great fish every year for anglers. Here is a prime example... Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Fish for the most part are at the end of spawn or have already spawned out on most of the lakes. Water temps range from 55-61 degrees. Yesterday was good boating, going 3 for 5 with the first 50 incher of the year. Saw 10-12 others. It was a great day on the water and even put a 11 yr ole kid his ffirst musky....and he caught it on the 8 as well!!! Very cool moment.
