Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Possibly quick strike rigged suckers under tip ups. Spider is an action lake (for me at least) with pretty high numbers of low to mid 30 inch muskies. Unless the weather changes significantly, the water might be pretty cold yet at the end of May. I think I'd probably start with smaller bucktails like Mepps Musky Marabous or spinnerbaits, 6-8" twitchbaits, etc. Spider is quite clear so I tend to stick to more natural baits, but in general I don't get too wrapped up in having just the right color. Spider has lots of nice weeds and structure. I'd bet you'll see your share of fish just fishing classic weedlines, weedy bays, etc. I haven't fished it a lot, but usually catch something or at least see a couple out there.

Posts: 114 | Its gonna be interesting up there based on the weather. Ive had good success early in the year on spider with 1oz spinnerbaits like grim reaper in walleye pattern and slow moving glides also in gold / brown / yellow combos. If I'm up there earl this June I will definitely have a sucker out on a quick strike rig - in previous cold spring years the suckers saved the trip. Good luck

Posts: 72 | The spring dog, the smallest bulldog has worked on cold years. Otherwise crane 6" twitch baits or the small size suick, I think it's 7". We will often catch more fish suspended off the weed lines (15-20fow) as in shallow early season. If you have two people have one throw out and one throw in until you see what's moving. Some days both work and other days the active fish may be suspended or may be shallow, it's just important to not get too caught up on fish fishing one depth range unless you are seeing fish.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Another consideration - I have caught fish and had action opening weekends on Large Hardheads and Mag Dawgs. Probably in years that were warmer than this one will be, but don't be afraid to try normal size baits either. I'd guess they wouldn't turn down a 12" sucker to eat a 6" perch even early in the year, so don't keep all your regular baits at home either.
