Has anyone ever got a muskie to eat a Jackpot in a figure 8? And I don't mean on the L....
I have never heard of anyone doing it, and I've even asked guides, most will tell you on the 'pot, its a waste.

I agree, the fish seem to loose interest in the figure 8.I think that you are better off if you grab a new rod and throw a follow up bait.I like to come back on them with another topwater.

I once caught about a 42"er on a Jackpot on a figure-8 that had a trailer of weeds on it that was about 5 feet long. I had snaged a floater on the way in, and just started to crank the lure to the boat in a hurry to get the damn weed off. All of a sudden I see a wake come up behind the weed. I got the whole thing to the boat and started to figure-8 and at about the 3rd turn the fish swam right up past the weed and grabed the Jackpot. However, I doubt that this would be proper techinique, and wouldn't recommend trying this on a regular basis.

I guess that it goes to show that you should never say never, and that sometimes strange things happen when fishing muskies.

I have also caught a couple of other fish on figure-8's with Jackpots. I mostly catch them if I put the lure under water and just keep it going, and not worry about the zigging and zagging. I usually go much faster with the lure on the figure-8 than I was during the retrive.

Doug's example is a great one and just goes to show you that you never know with these fish what will happen next.

I haven't gotten a figure eight jackpot fish yet but it certainly could happen. No matter what lure you are throwing, ALWAYS do a boatside maneuver NO MATTER WHAT. You just never know.

I had one of the coolest jackpot experiences this past year on Lake of the Woods. I launched a cast way out there to a small spine that had tips with nips. As soon as the jackpot hit the water I saw back. The fish became more and more aggressive the quicker I worked the jackpot. I swear she was half out of the water about 10 feet from the boat. At about 5 feet out she decides to eat and all hell broke loose. It was amazing.

I believe the best answer for this type of question is to always figure eight any type of lure when fishing for musky or really any active gamefish. I know for a fact that many muskies have been caught by figure eighting many different kinds of baits. I also have to say that there are many musky fisherman that have lost decent sized fish because they were lazy on the figure eight or just forgot to do it. This is the case on baits like the jackpot or even lures like the suick!

I caught a musky once when demonstrating the figure eight to my good friend that does not fish much. He was tossing a bucktail, and I was demonstrating with a trophy minnow. The fish must have followed his bait in and stayed near the boat. When I put my lure in the water and began the figure eight the fish came out of nowhere and ate it hard!

Don't be lazy on a bait that you feel does not figure eight well, because a hungary musky behind the lure may think different!

Mr. Johnson, The R & D portion of Slammer Bait, World Wide Enterprises, is developing, as we speak, an entire line of synthetic weeds in all different sizes, colors, and varieties! You may have stumbled onto the newest leading edge fishing technique which will sweep the muskie fishing world! If I were you I would negotiate at least the naming rights to this hot new technique, before you are little more than an asterik in the muskie fishing history books!!!! By the way, just what kind of weed was your trailer?

Yeah, I know it was lucky, up on Eagle Lake, ON in July in 2000 at noon, I had a wide shouldered 47.5 hit my bright green/chartruse bellied jackpot as I started into a figure 8. I saw the fish charging 10 yards behind on the starboard/stern and I ran out of line so I used a coupled small jerks and started a counterclockwise figure 8 on the port side of the stern and she came up and lightly nipped it - she finessed the lure and I had her. That was a great fish - she was very thick and strong (See attached photo). She was released and was in fine shape. Would I have done a figure 8 had I not seen her? - I'm not sure, I usually do a quick 90 degree turn and start into a figure 8 and call it good with a jackpot. With crankbaits/bucktails I do the full figure 8 almost always.
Good luck.
