My brother and I are going to make a "custom" tackle box to hold our big baits.  To hold stuff like Wishmasters, 16" Jakes, etc....all the stuff that won't fit in our Lakewoods.

My initial idea is to use 1/2" plywood for the sides, bottom, and lid.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use for the inside grids??

I was going to seal the whole thing in either epoxy or polyester resin....has anyone done anything like this??

Fleet-Farm and Menards both carry 2 1/2" sq. downspout plastic tubing that works great for making your own box. In my neck of the woods it cost around $5 per 10 ft piece. Compare the two store because one has a thicker wall than the other (I think it's anywhere around 1/16" to 1/2").

I made a bait hanging box this past winter. I wanted it to hold 10" suicks and bigger cranks, gliders, and tails. I have a couple lakeland and plano hanging boxes but only wanted something to hold around 20 baits so i could jsut grab certain baits for a day trip to a specific body of water and go. I used 1/4" (i'm pretty sure, but dont know it right off hand)lexan which i got from a local glass specalist (same stuff used to make crankbait lips). Its a lil pricy but it holds up pretty well. I didnt make individual dividers in mine, like most hanging bait boxes, but jsut ran 3 lexan dividers length ways and used some cedar i had laying around for the box and routered out slots to hold the lexan in place. Hope this helps a little bit.

Travis, i dont' think 2 1/2 will be quite big enough for BIG bait, but i get the idea...we'll check it out.

This box will be fun to create.  Like Tomcat said, I don't think we'll be using any "tubes"....because these lures are BIG.  Some of them are are 5-7" from their back to their bellies.

Might lay some glass over it all to make it indestructable....and seal it with good two-part Epoxy.  Maybe even gel-coat it.

It's a serious box for serious baits.

I used doorskin material (go to your local lumberyard and ask for a doorskin) for the grid in my custom tacklebox. It is very lightweight and strong when formed into a grid. I then painted it with plastic urethane paint to make it waterproof.

Keep your hooks sharp.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe Masonite. Can be notched and fit together without too much work. m

I have used a 5 gallon bucket with downspout inside. It takes up alot of room, so I removed them. Now I got those trebles hanging on the outside lip..kinda dangerous. Anyone know how big they make buckets??? The depth is good, but I want more ROOOM. The bucket I have now had pickles in it from a deli. Anyone see large buckets anywhere in their travels? Thanks. Oh, and that 5 gallon is probably larger, maybe even 10. bhw

plexiglass is cheaper than lucite and will work fine (lucite is better tho). I had a few emails with the guys who make big wood/lucite Musky boxes. They use 1/2 inch plywood. It is stronger even tho it is heavy (it is not like you are going to carry it around the mall all day). They also told me to cut the lucite use your table saw with the blade turned backwards. Yes I said backwards, it will nibble at the lucite instead of grabbing it and shattering or cracking it. I have yet to make mine but plan to make a large open box with the hip ends (like the carpenters box)and a 1 inch dowell for a handle. there is NOT the perfect box out there yet (not even close) I want room for about 40 big hanging baits, then a spot for 2 or 3 big plano 3700's , then you still need more compartments for gps, camera, tools, etc..
