Just passing some time going through my gear and pretending it's not snowing outside. Looking at it, I'm wondering whether I've got my rods and reels paired up to get the most out of them. Here's what I have:

Rods
9' Tackle Industries, XXH
9' Tackle Industries, XH
8' St. Croix Premier, H
7.5' Musky Innovations Bulldawg Series, MH
7.5' Gander Mountain Pro Select, MH (Softer than the Musky Innovations rod)

Reels
Calcutta 400D
Calcutta 400B w. power handle
Record 60 w. power handle
Pflueger Trion 66
Curado 300EJ

Then, which combo would you recommend for which applications?

Thanks. Fr. K

I think you are good to go in the order you have rods and reels listed.

That's how I have them paired-up, so thanks!

looks like a solid setup. What baits do you throw with the 300ej?

TI XXH - 400D - Dawgs
TI XH - 400B - Big Blades
Premier H - 300ej - Everything else (this would be my fav combo of everything you have, can throw everything but the huge stuff; personally I'd extend the handle a couple inches)
Others - loaners, spares, backups, leave in the garage, sell, etc.

I use it for smaller blades and plastic, even plugs and minnow baits. Tried double tens, but they're just a bit too much for that reel.

While the Record 60 has been a disappointment, the Trion 66 is actually a sweet little reel. Wouldn't put big loads on it, but it's great for throwing Suicks, etc. The MI rod is about five years old, and seems to be of much better quality than those they're making now - lots of backbone.

official thread highjacking!

I am going through my current setups and wondering if I have them set up the best. I just got back into musky fishing the past two years and probably coulda thought my purchases out a little better so I'm considering doing some trading...

Have these)
9' TI XH - Tranx HG - Rubber/burning
9' TI XH - revo winch - Big blades/slow topwaters
8' TI XH - revo nacl 6.4 - smaller blades/jerks/cranks/tops
7'6" TI XXH - shimano cardiff - smaller twitch/wtd surface
7'6" MH musky mojo - 6500 c3- small bucktails (mostly mepps spring time stuff)

I was thinking of trading my HG for a PG for running blades. Then, sell the winch and buy a calcutta 400d or nacl 5.4.1. I'm thinking the nacl HS would be fine for throwing reg dawgs (I don't throw pounders much) instead of the HG.

it would look something like this

considering these)
9' TI XH - NACL 6.4 - Rubber/burning
9" TI XH - tranx pg - big blades / creepers/ hawg wobblers
8' TI XH - 400d or nacl 5.4 - #9 blades & smaller/ jerks/ cranks/ top raiders
both 7'6" setups the same...

easier to)
just swap the nacl 6.4 for a 5.4??

thoughts??

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as saying your other rods/reels were junk.  I just think there is no practical need for more than 3 combos (other than keeping them for back ups or for friends to use), and the 3 combos I listed are what I think are you best three.  If it were my gear, that's what I'd use anyway.

The biggest thing is I think you are wasting your best reel on your worst rod, but I have a weird love for Curados.

No offense taken. You're right, it is my worst rod (though it's never had problems handling muskies) and it's in line for replacement. But for now, I like it paired-up with the Curado, since of all my reels the Curado is the best at throwing lighter lures and the Pro Select loads up nicely for casting the lighter stuff.
