So I bought a boat last year that has a 2007 225 Yamaha 4 stroke. I did not hit anything with the prop that would cause my issue. I winterized my motor last year myself, when I drained the lower unit it was the color is should be (clear looking like molasses). I replaced that with new lube to sit in over the winter like you should. I decided to take my boat out to the river yesterday and when I was putting my boat in the garage last night I noticed by my top lower unit screw( where you put the oil) there was a little milky color coming out by the screw. I freaked out cause I know you don't want any type of water in the lower unit. So I ran two the dealer bought some new lube came home and drained the lower unit and it was a Carmel like color. When I took the screws of both sealers were on the screws. I immediately changed lube and righted back up.

My questions is what caused this to happen? Do I need to worry about it this? Could it possible be from the screw not being tight enough? Why was the color Carmel looking?

Any feedback would be much appreciated I want to resolve this problem before I have more serious-issues down the road.

You do know to fill it from the bottom till it come out the top so there is no air trapped in there, right?

No. I did it from the top- I guess time to drain and start over again.

Good thing you figured it out before you ran it. Fill it from the bottom til it comes out the top hole... Plug the top hole, remove the filler line, plug the bottom hole. The oil wont pour out the bottom hole when you romove the line because the top hole is plugged and there is no air to start the flow. Good to go.

I think if you saw caramel colored oil leaking from a screw it wasn't tight to start with. Oil doesn't usually drain from those places unless the screw isn't seated tight or the washer is missing. A very small air leak will pull water in when the unit cools fast this time of year causing a vacuum.

I would run it to a repair shop and have it tested for pressure and vacuum to be sure it isn't a seal problem....might cost a couple bucks you don't want to spend but a lower unit is costly if the gears get damaged.

I would also get new rubber gaskets/ rubber washers on the nuts. I put new ones on every year.

Hiya,

All good advice above... One thing to check as well would be the seal behind the prop as that seal, in most cases will be the one that is damaged somehow..usually due to line being wrapped around the shaft.

Get yourself a lower unit pump to put the gear lube in. It makes things a lot easier. Be sure to get the right size for your unit otherwise you'll need an adapter fitting.

X3. I couldn't figure out why one of my screws was leaking until a buddy mentioned there was supposed to be a rubber gasket. Replace them every year, they're like $3.
