I have a 401 and like it. I bought it half way through last season, and it did alright. Casts smooth. I have heard other people have had some issues, but I did not.

I have a c4 5601, and like it. I just wish they had the thumb bar on the 6501.

Guys,

Get the lefty version of the Abu C4 6601 from Cabela's.  It has a thumb bar so you get the best of both worlds.  Hard to find good reels if you're a lefty!

I own a Catala 300. I've been casting musky plugs and 80# Power Pro with it for 3 years and haven't had any indication of impending doom. Caught 3 fish with it up to 36" and 12#. Not a big one by any means but the casting takes it's toll on equipment too. Ironically, I asked the very same question on this board and got hammered by the ABU guys. 2 weeks later I was in the chat and 3 or 4 people were singing the praises of the Catala and ABU's were getting trashed. Go figure! I own 6 Shimano reels and have been very pleased with their service and product. I am especially proud of my 18 year old Bantam Mag Plus 250X which has only had 1 pinion gear replaced since I've owned it. And yes, I've caught 100's of bass on it and who knows how many casts it's made. I've also obtained an extra spool for my Curado 200 so I can switch from bass to musky with it. That's a fine reel too. Good luck!

I have a catala for a year good reel.Abu alot of probs.Abu has not served myself or few fishing partners well.I am not sponsered by Shimano, and would rather buy an American lefty baitcaster.I,myself have no faith in Abu Garcia.Catala is a great choice.0723

I have Abu's that are 15-20 years old and are holding up better than my Abu's that were just purchased in the last two years ... my partners have also noticed the same thing ... the quality just doesn't seem to be there anymore ... if you fish hard, don't expect abu's to last long ...

I made the switch to the calcutta TE and have fallen in love (even though i'm thinking about having to work a second job to pay for 'em)

I was one of those with a bad experience with the Catala.  Lefty model was grinding gears after only one day.  I like my Cabela's Abu C4 6601 and 5601, but I agree with those who say they're not too durable.  I've been lucky with Abu; I imagine others have been lucky with the Catalas.  Got myself a Calcutta TE and it's been great.  Also have a Calcutta 251 for years that I've never had trouble with.

If I was right-handed, I'd get an Abu Morrum or the Calcutta 400.  Those are certainly built for the long haul.
