Location: MN | You still need an auger extension on most lakes in N MN and there is 1+ foot of snow on top of that ice. It all depends on what happens in April. If we get the snow like we did last April we could be looking at the end of May. I'm keeping the plank and auger ready for walleye opener.

Posts: 1828 | DonPursch - 3/22/2014 6:13 PM Leech Lake May 18th 44" of ice here That has been my guess for Winnie this year - one day later than last year (which was a record-setting late ice out). We've been making ice the last few days, and added some fresh insulation on top. It will all depend on how much snow we get in the next three weeks. But besides having a June-like April, I don't see any way we'll be rid of ice by walleye opener.

Posts: 833 | We need rain! Forecast in the Metro may be promsing later this week. If the system stays warm enough we could get a significant rainfall and that will do a lot for an earlier ice out. But if it comes as snow... We may be fishing the spawn on opener again this year. Could be an opportunity for a truly legendary fish on the right body of water though, so there is that.

Posts: 3511 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Although it is cold now, temps in the upper 50's to 60's would do damage fast...especially after the snow has melted...greenhouse effect will start it's thing under the ice, and soon enough, that 44" up north will be history. I am hoping sooner than later for it all. I'm going to go out on a limb with hopeful thoughts that things will warm up next week and stay there. I predict ice out to be a week later than what is considered normal. Not holding my breath just yet... Steve

Location: Eastern Ontario | In the 70's when we had winters not unlike this past winter ice on our local lake would go out within 2 days either side of April 17. The last 2 or 3 years it was out mid March. So this year I'm betting April 17. Pike would be spawning in the creeks in early April while ice was still on the lake and have never seen ice on the lake for the opening of pickerel (walleye) second Sat. in May.

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | I'm guessing mid to late May on the LOTWs unless something real warm happens soon. It was -12 below this AM at the Angle. It takes two extensions to get through the ice (around 48" or so). Still lots of snow to melt. Probably a late ice out. Doug Johnson

Posts: 32 Location: Tower, Lake Vermilion | I think we are looking at a record late ice out here on Lake Vermilion. It still looks like Antarctica up here, knee deep snow on the ice, with 4 to 6 inches more coming on Thursday night. Not much warm weather in the long range forecast, so I wouln't get my hopes up for fishing the Walleye opener on the Big V. "Ace" Is the ice gone yet? No dear, you can go back to sleep.
