+2 on the Stay Loc, you'll never worry about one opening up.

I've had a cross-lok come undone more than once, lost a couple of lures that way. StayLoc is all that I will use now.

Dump all snaps, use solid rings.

Gerard, I use to feel the same way years ago and was 100% solid rings w snaps... once the stay locs came out I switched some leaders to those and have loved them... I also feel on baits like a triple d I get more shimmy and shake w a stay loc.... they won't fail if you change them out once the paint wears off at the bend...

If you're set on crosslocks then I would go with a size 6. Like most others I prefer the Stay-Lok Pro Snap. I use the 4.5 size most of the time but will use the size 5 from time to time.

I have used hundreds of crosslocks without a failure or one coming all the way open. If it does get punched open normally the hook catches the bottom wire. With that being said I always replace them after awhile or if ever the wire looses it snap. I also use allot of crosslocks and find the design to be preferred. I believe it is flat out a better design. As a bonus with the crosslocks you can replace them on a leader without cutting the leader apart. I actually use for Muskie from #4 -#6 with 4.5 being my favorite size. I do not troll with that though.

Another vote for the 4.5 Stay-Locks. The 5's won't fit some medium-sized baits, including Believer's and 9-inch Suick's. The 4.5's are good all around. Never had a Stay-Lock fail.

I was asked what size solid rings I use, so I scanned the package for him/her.

I reposted after corrections, had crosslocks on the brain!

Mustad took over String Ease. Hope they get them on the market and not fall behind.

If you take the very end bend on the stay lock, and just tweak it out a hair with a pair of pliers, it will fit any bait. Doesn't affect the snaps performance, I've been doing it for years.

Dump all snaps, use solid rings.

How do you use these differently with your set up without snaps? Thanks

Split rings on all my baits (Bucher's, Worth, and Wolverines are all stronger than any snap), and if the single strand wire is thick (top pic) you won't need a solid ring on the leader (bottom one), but otherwise attach each bait with a split ring pliers, to the split ring on the bait.

Have you used them with fluro instead of wire?

Yes, BNelson made up some with 130# fluorocarbon with a solid ring, but still prefer the 21 or 19 strand stainless steel cable from Leaders and Lures for my flexible leaders. Its actual wire, its durable, and it will never get cut.
