Posts: 345 Location: Poynette WI. | I'm looking into fishing with soft plastics more. Like tubes, senko's, jigs and etc. I've only really used these set ups for bass fishing. I'm wondering if anyone else has any tips or set ups they like to use for musky. I'm wondering what sort of leader material to use, line type and weight work best. I've always over looked this style, but would like to learn more about it for sight fishing and fish in the weeds. So any tips on what to use, gear, lures, styles, presentations, best conditions to fish would be great. I've been doing some searching for articles on it and thats been helpful, but still feel like some of the information i have found has been limited. I tried looking through prior posts with out much luck. I'm looking to pick up some of this stuff but not sure what to buy yet. Thanks

Posts: 994 Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | We use these allot. I am still looking for the baitcast ROD that really matches these baits. Now we are still using spinning equipment. I have been running both seven strand and fluorocarbon leaders. (I change both out on a regular basis.) I also have one set up with a smaller tube that I do not have a leader on at all. For shut down fish I run the risk.

Posts: 393 | Early in the season I have had great success with a 7' heavy spinning rod and reel with 30 lb braid with a tieable leader for jigs and plastics like the applications you mentioned. I have used weedless applications in shallow water bays and weeds.

Posts: 2269 Location: SE, WI. | Fishfinder, there was a post called" shallow jigging" back in December 12 and 13th. Do a search...2 articles in that thread. Should give you a good start. I use a flippin stick, or a medium heavy baitcasting rod, with a high speed reel like the Curado, or diawa TD 2Hi Line, I use a 30-60lb super braid, or in cold weather 17lb -20 lb XL mono. Leader, 7x7 , 40lb test coated , very limp, OR twist weld 30lb. Always wire!!! Don't be broken hearted by a bite off. Besides, wire slices weeds way better than floro. Jigs weights all are depending of the depth I'm targeting. From 1/4 to 1 oz. JD

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Similar to JD, I use a SC Premier Flippin stick extended to 8'. On that I have a Lexa 100 HS bait caster with 65# line. I use 7x7 wire with double barrel crimps. A couple friends have Okuma 7'11" H guide select swim bait rods and they are a great spring muskie rod for many applications not just jigs (large x raps, 6" grandma, rattle traps, etc).

Posts: 345 Location: Poynette WI. | I just picked up an Abu spinning rod/reel at a garage sale that has a pretty smooth drag and will hold 17-20 lb test. I was thinking about putting that on a 7ft St.Croix also. I miss using my spinning rods. I hardly ever pick them up anymore unless I'm pan or trout fishing in the spring.
