Posts: 125 | I am looking forward this year to fishing more at night. What are the "trends" for night fishing? Color? Size? Lure type? How late into the night? Do day spots translate to night spots? Cant wait for that blind figure eight hit...

Posts: 2385 Location: Chisholm, MN | Here in Northern Minnesota, I start night fishing at the end of June when the water warms up a little. That's not to say you can't catch a fish at night before that, but I have had the best success when the water is reaching 70 degrees. Muskies definitely bite well at night, but it's not a guarantee. I stick with bucktails at night for the most part. I like bright colors on bright nights and dark colors on dark nights. If I can stand it, I fish all night. Pay attention to moon rise and set, and moon up and moon down. This is your best action. You need to slow down your baits and your boat control. You have to fish your best at night. That means quality figure 8s after every cast. You may or may not see fish following....there are no rules here. Casts need to be accurate so you aren't getting weeds constantly, but your bait should be in the structure the fish are using. One key is to not shine your light in the water or make a lot of noise, especially when you are fishing in shallow water. Also, if you are fishing before dark and aren't seeing fish, don't worry. Sometimes it really is exclusively a night bite and when that major roles around you can get into fish heavy!

Posts: 345 Location: Poynette WI. | I have had luck fishing the shallows, sometimes if the fish was any closer to the bank it would be out of the water. I have gotten fish in a foot of water before. It is important to have your boat organized at night and not to leave lures laying around have your releasing tools ready etc. Things can get hetic quickly at night so having things in order will help when you do finally get that fish on. I like to use a glow in the dark strip that i attach at my leader so i can see my bait as it's getting to the boat, this helps with better fig.8's. you can also put glow and the dark strips on the top of topwater lures also. Glow in the dark stickers in the boat help with keeping lights off and still seeing where thing are, like the direction of your trolling motor etc. A good headlight is also pretty important to have. One other tip is i put a sock over our white light in the back of the boat, this also helps keep bugs away. Good luck fishing, cant wait to get out night fishing myself now.

Location: Contrarian Island | do the same things you do during the day at night... I tend to slow down a bit at night but that's not to say fish can't track down a burned bucktail at night..they easily can... typically topwaters and bucktails are in the water the most... fish can and will bite at any minute day or night...some of my biggest have come from 2am to 4:30am....

Posts: 427 Location: Planet Meltdown | My buddy got a real nice fish at night on a pacemaker after 13 hours of fishing without seeing a single fish. Sometimes that window of opportunity comes at night and if it's a nice summer evening and the bugs are not eating you alive it pays to say out late. Bright moon - white or yellow. Cloudy, dark night - Black. I've had good luck using these colors while striped bass fishing at night. Pretty sure the same goes for most fish.

Posts: 109 Location: Wisconsin River | The last couple years I stumbled on to a nite bite in the fall. Last year I was able to key in on it and didnt start fishing it untill after sunset. Moon rise and set were important but slow presentation I think was a real key. Night bites are awesome. Be safe!!!
