Hello all,

I am looking at buying a 1996 690 VS and need some options to shorten it's foot print in my garage. I measured 24'-6" OAL with the motor trimmed and supported be the transom saver. I get 23'-6" to my garage door. It looks like I can move the winch assembly ahead a few inches and I'm guessing trimming the motor down will help by another 4"-6". Ultimately I think it will take a swing away tongue to reasonably fit. The problem is the trailer does't look compatible with a break way hinge due to the side rails extending within ~16" or so of the coupler. This trailer also has the surge brake actuator. Any advice?

Hiya,

Without seeing the rig it would be hard to tell, but I think it might be possible to get a hinge coupler on it, as anything you cut off in front of the winch, save a couple of inches, will then fold to the side.

Before doing so, I'd be curious to see how much more you gain by turning the engine full to one way or the other to see how much that gains you. Might be enough with that alone before pulling out the cutting tool and modifying the trailer.

You can never have to big of a garage, add on. Seriously the boat will probably fit with the motor trimmed down and turned to the side. I would bet manufacturers build the packages to fit into a standard size garage.

Hiya,

Yep...no swing tongue for you on that trailer. I am hopeful for you that if you can turn the motor, you will have the room you need.

Be cautious when moving the winch stand forward. As you do, it puts more tongue weight on the hitch. Too much will not be good, and can also negatively affect the operation of the brake actuator.

Thanks for the input. Does anybody have data on the overall length of a '96 690 as it sits on the trailer trimmed down?

I think you'd be better off cutting out the drywall and a couple studs in your garage and putting in a header of sorts if it comes down to a few inches. The garage won't fall down. ****ing around with the trailer like that is bound to cause problems.

I have the same exact trailer. I had the same exact issue as my garage is 23' deep in the stall where I wanted to put the boat. I discussed my options with a local Ranger dealer and ended up moving the winch assembly forward 3 inches. No issues what so ever with the trailer. My garage is finished off so I cut out the dry wall between the studs where lowered motor would contact the wall. I lower my tongue by turning the tongue wheel all the way down, trim the motor all the way down and turn it completely to the right. The motor housing fits nicely in the space I cut out. Kind of a pain in the butt, but it fits nicely and I have a couple of inches to spare. It will easily fit in your garage!! Good luck.

Thanks guys. I thought about the cut out too. I am confident enough now to pull the trigger and buy the boat. I appreciate the input.

Trim motor down, turn motor fully to one side and back into garage....Get just the ass end of rig in then turn your wheel all the way rt or lt...slowly back in watching so the side of gunnel is just missing the side of garage opening, if about to hit, straighten up a bit...keep that gunnel as close as possible to the Side of the garage opening as possible and keep backing in..this is assuming you have dual axel, if single you may be able to angle it by hand.
