How to tell a Muskie  or other fish from the fisherman:

 

The most dependable way is to carry a copy of 'American Food and Game Fishes' by Jordan and Everman. Anything not listed in the index is a fisherman.

Then again, one may just scratch at the surface. If it is scaly, and wet, it is a fish. Dry, it is a fisherman, unless he just fell in trying to load up his rig. Don't trust your nose; there can at times be very little difference.
