If you have what was the species and size of the collateral damaged fish? I had this happen while operch fishing in presque except it was a big pike. That really got the blood pumpin!

Posts: 279 Location: Central Wisconsin | I've probably had it happen 15 times over the years. On Smallmouth bass, Largemouth bass, Walleye, and perch. Usually they let go, but have had a few stolen and one bass that was pretty mangled by the time the musky let go. In both rivers and lakes.

Posts: 426 Location: Perryville, MO | Yup...I'm sure we'll hear lots of the stories here (think this has been a topic on a couple of occiasions). Largest for me was a LM bass just short of 15" on Kinkaid last summer when temps were too high to be targeting muskie. T-boned right as I was starting to stoop down and lip him. Scared the crap out me (evidenced by the wet spot in my pants, afterward)! Bass was returned to the water as turtle food. Muskie swam off quickly as I believe I spooked him freaking out about what took place. Low 30" fish. As has been said numerous times, the size of their prey at times can be quite amazing (of course, a hooked fish is often an easy meal). Actually every bit as exciting is watching the #6+ LM inhale 10"-12" bluegills on private strip pit land I fish in Central IL. My father and I have landed several of them that way. Huge thrill even though at times it becomes quite regular. (Luxury of under-utilized private strip mine water). Also, I've got a regular bluegill honey-hole (public water that I'll leave un-named) that for the last three years running has shown a very large flathead with a taste for hooked 'gills. Seen her a half-a-dozen times now. Not exactly sure how big, but my son-in-law trot-lines the mississippi and he'd be impressed with this fish. Edited by hawkeye9 2/8/2014 12:34 PM

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | My oldest son caught his first pike on the chip reeling in a perch. Dad I can't reel it in, I look over his rod is bent double. You dont have a perch on anymore I told him. Not a huge pike but he had fun on his light action 4'6" rod.

Never saw this fish. . . was drop shotting for smallmouth on a drop off. Felt a very light tick, which was the small mouth, set the hook, and the rod immediately doubled over and was pulling drag into deeper water. Then, just as quickly, the fight let up, and I reeled in this small bass. Must have been a pretty good one, though, as it appears that the whole bass must've been in its mouth. Posts: 164 | Several years ago I was fishing in a small U P lake that had muskies planted in it 20 years earlier but were not believed to still be in it. As I was reeling felt like a medium sized pike all of a sudden the fight got a whole lot tougher on the pike tackle we had. After a long battle we got the fish next to the canoe and realized I had a 24" pike and a 48"musky had it also. After beaching the canoe the musky let go of the pike when we all most beached it also. We through the half eaten pike back and the musky grabbed the pike again and left. The next day we went back and caught what we believe to be the same 48" musky. This is what started my musky obsession.

Posts: 1283 | Ive never netted or actually seen it take place but had something small on the end of the line, that all the sudden felt huge. Then as fast as it happened it was over and nothing except a cut line when I finished reeling it in.

Posts: 413 Location: Madison WI | I like to use panfish for bait (legal in WI) and every year I manage to have at least 1 muskie come up and smoke the panfish before I can get it in and on a muskie rod. It happened so much 1 year that I put 50 lb braid on my bluegill pole to give myself somewhat of a chance, however when you are using tiny jigs it is pretty much impossible to land them.

Posts: 364 Location: Central Wisconsin | Jigging for walleye on lac suel several years ago i had a light fast hit set the hook and thought i was snagged. Until it started to slowly swim away. Got it to the surface it was either a large pike or musky. By time we got the net it let go of the walleye. It had a 17.5 in walleye t boned in its mouth.. I wish I could of netted that one.

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | That is how I got into musky fishing. I was at one of my favorite crappie spots, we were slammin the crappie that day. It was 12" after 12" after 12". I hooked up, and was reeling in, all of the sudden my rod just buckled. Started screaming line. Also I was using a light action rod with 6lb mono. Got the fish to come up a little and my wife yells " IT'S A CARP, IT'S A CARP". My first thought was, Carp don't eat crappie minnows bouncing off the bottom. Again the fish came a little closer and I saw a flash of the tail. My next thought was "this is the biggest #*^@ walleye I have ever seen"!. But then it all came together when the fish came up for a third time (maybe 15 minutes into the fight) and I saw the stripes of a barred musky. She was BIG. After another 10 or so minutes, the fish was at the surface just lazily coming towards the boat. I was in awwe of her. She was gorgeous, fat and something I always dreamed of as a young angler. She released my crappie about 3 ft from the boat and just hung out on the surface as we watched for about 5 minutes. I didn't take her out of the water, and I didn't get a measurement. But with the knowledge I have of musky now, My guess would be somewhere close to 50". She swam away, and that spot has become one of my personal favorites on the lake I fish. The next day I went and blew $1000 on gear and I haven't looked back since... And instead of catching them to fill this strange void. It seems that every fish I boat, the hole gets just a little bigger. But I guess that is why it is an obsession, a passion and a pure lifestyle that I have come to love and respect

Posts: 216 | Had them attack a few eyes on the way in.A few years back on opener weekend, water was high and dirty,we hadn't seen any ski's but we'd caught a few smallies. We were floating between a short rocky rapid sections where theres usually a smallie or 2 and never a muskie.I threw a 6"walleye jake up in a creek mouth and out jumps a 3 pound smalie shaking my lure side to side dancing. I said there another smallie.I turned and looked at my buddy Scottie to say something and he was pointing with his mouth wide open. I looked back at my nice smallie to see it in the maw of a nice fat 40"tiger Muskie. It jumped a few times out away from the boat and as soon as it got close enough for a net job it jumped again shaking his head and flung the smallmouth toward us almost taking Scott out and to my surprise it had one of the hooks in him. I landed him. One of 2 natural tigers that i have caught on a river that I've only ever saw one dink pike on in my life. And I don't believe there's ever Ben any stockers near this place

Posts: 171 | At least 4 times on Little Vermilion up by Sioux Lookout. 2 perch and 2 SMBass. I was casting for muskies and my wife was fishing a leech for bass. She got one about 12" on. I looked over the side in time to see the flash about 4' down....her rod doubled, hit the side of the boat and snapped the line. I fought one for several minutes on a perch. He didn't let go until he got under the boat. I thought we had a chance to land that one. Very exciting on light gear! ErieBoy75

Posts: 98 | My father in law caught a small pike on a small bucktail and was bringing it in when the musky took the pike. Held on for awhile but couldn't get it in the net. Also had about an 18" smallie eat a marabou on a river. Reeling that in and had about a 45" grab him at the side of the boat. Scared the hell outta me...

Location: Sawyer County, WI | I was casting a beetle spin off the dock on a hot, sunny day with a light spinning setup and was having a blast catching 10-14 inch largemouth one after the other. I was reeling in yet another bass when I saw a flash in the water and before I knew it the bass was t-boned by a mid 30s musky. The musky headed for deeper water and the drag was singing but I managed to get it back close to the dock. Eventually, the musky gave up and I reeled in the bass whose head was almost completely severed from the body. I ran back to the cabin to grab the bait casting set up and a net and I casted a gold husky jerk out to where I last saw the musky. After a few casts I got a follow but the fish saw me and took off again. Although I felt I blew my chance I kept casting and on the third or fourth cast I hooked up and landed my first musky - a nice 36 incher. Later that week I proceeded to drop a pile of money on proper musky gear and haven't looked back yet.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I had this grab a crappie a couple years back. Ended up getting the jig into the tip of it's nose and the crappie had ripped off by the time I landed it. Have also had some walleyes get eaten. Almost caught one on a walleye but it let go just before the net. Attachments ---------------- 42b.jpg (70KB - 123 downloads)

Posts: 785 | Last season had about a 26" northern slam a mag dawg... 2 seconds later a musky right around the 50" class slammed the pike and ripped it right off the dawg. I was stewing on that one wondering what would of happened had the pike stayed out of the way. My step father had about an 11" pike a few years ago and he goes "stupid little pike". I looked up to see a huge boil and was like "I think you're wrong on that one". Turned out to be about a 44" musky that sucked it right in. About 10' out it ripped it off the hook as well. Had some other close encounters, always make for cool memories.
