Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | I have been in the market for a new muskie rig for 2 years now but I have run into the problem that few of the boats are offering rod storage over 8'. (I would want a boat no bigger than 17 to 18 ft, preferably glass with a 150, single axle so I can move it by hand) [None of the big names offer good size rod storage. [Lund, Alumacraft, Crestliner, Ranger, or Tuffy] and they are all very nice boats except for the short rod storage. With all the guys going to longer rods it is almost a bit frustrating finding a rig that works for muskie fishing anymore. I don't fish three guys much but if I do it doesn't take long to have $2K worth of >8' rods in a boat and it sure would be nice to be able to put them away. I know it can be done because lots of guys have modified old rigs . Does anyone know of such a rig? Winter is getting old, have a good day. ![]()

Posts: 118 | Sorry....can't help you with a rig that'll hold those long rods.....I only know when me and the wife fish....we have 8 rods baited all the time......and it'd take forever to put them all away between spots.....when you watch the muskie tv shows with all those professionals fishing.....and they catch a fish....it looks like Rollie and Helens exploded on their front deck with all the rods and baits.....just my 2 cents....because I have nothin' better to do on this cold day either.......good fishin' Edited by pondigger 1/25/2014 4:24 PM

Posts: 670 Location: Otsego, MN | The 618 tiller will get 9 footers if you would go with a tiller. I formerly owned a 2006 618 vs and could get 8-6 in the locker as Nolan mentioned above. Not many boats will do the 9 footer without making modifications.

Posts: 192 | I have a Triton 189 and can put 9' rods in the locker. They won't go into the rod tubs but they go right down the middle where there are no tubes.

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | look at the Skeeter MX 1825 it will hold a 8 foot rod in the center rod locker. 12 Footers in the side. great boat with the F150 Yamaha will do just over 50 mph. I run around 40 most of the time . I had a crestliner same problem no room for long rods heard abougt the MX 1825 took a look at it bought one, two weeks latter. Posts: 224 Location: Madison | Recon makes a 17' that will hold rods over 9', but I've never fished (or even seen) one. If you're close to a dealer you may want to check them out. I looked pretty hard at the skeeter MX 1825, but ultimately didn't like the side locker as much as I'd hoped. Didn't like the idea of storing long rods bent against the hull, maybe it's fine but I was concerned about damage when running through big waves. Haven't heard of any problems with that though, so climb in one with a few long rods and see how you like getting them in and out of the side locker. Might be just what you're looking for.

Posts: 158 | If you are looking for a used boat, the Ranger 681 can take 9'ers. 135hp max though.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I'm pretty sure the Tuffy 1760 Deep V can take some 8'6" and the rest up to 8' rods. It's rated for a 150 console. I've been drooling over that boat in a tiller for a few year now. I think the Tuffy 1890 might take even longer rods but not 100% sure.

Posts: 1405 Location: Detroit River | The Recon 785 holds 12 rods in it's center locker (9'4" in the top row, 8'6" in the middle row, & 8' in the bottom row) and it's rated up to 150 HP. Some of the Yar Crafts hold up to 9' rods.

Posts: 865 | If You check the rod lockers carefully, you will notice that many of them will have a stop plate so the rod tips hit the plate and can not go in any further. Some are Aluminum some are Fiberglass.. But many of the times that plate is the back wall of another Bow compartment. Which makes it very easy to enlarge your rod locker area. Simply mark the area carefully you want to open up and with a 3/8" drill bit drill a hole in each corner of the stop plate in your rod locker. If you measured correctly the holes you just drilled are in the 4 corners of the area you want to open up....Now simply use a much larger drill bit and enlarge the four holes, and with a ruler and a marker draw a line from each hole to make a square or rectangle......Now with a small saw blade just saw straight across from hole to hole...Then simply put a piece of auto Door edge trim on each side with a drop of epoxy......You will now have a at least a 8-9 foot rod locker.. .Mike
