I hope I am wrong but I seem to be seeing quite a few videos on you tube where people are cutting hooks and releasing the fish without removing the cut portion with the barb.

Not related to muskies but in these tarpon tournaments I see on TV are they just getting a leader touch then breaking off and leaving the hook in the fish?

Sometimes removing the hook will cause more damage & kill the fish. That's why it's left in.

Or they are cutting the barb side.

I've always cut the lure free from the fish then pushed the remaining hook piece on through.

sometimes when you cut the hook the rest just pops out. Other times you have to do some major surgery. I always wondered the same thing about the tarpon fishing why they just snap the leader

I try to cut the barb off clean and just pull the lure out. Hooks are cheap, fish are not.

Hiya,

I find myself cutting more and more hooks as I continue in this sport, for no other reason than safety. When the extra hooks get tangled and you have a fish still trying to thrash in the net, it can be o.k at times, but other times it is just too hard to work on the fish.

In most cases, I will cut the hooks to free the fish and get them get back in the bag below water, then get the rest of the lure out,and finally go back and remove the remaining pieces of hook still embedded in the fish. Many times, the barb has protruded through, and the hook falls out on its own. When it is not, it is much easier to grab the hook with a pliars and get it out quickly.

Hooks are easy to replace and are much less painful than pulling out a barb in your own body, and the potential of stitches if things get really bad. Plus the expense of replacing a couple hooks is much less than a potential trip to the doctor.
