Posts: 255 Location: MadCity Wisconsin | Have you wondered what your lures look & sound like when underwater? We are looking forward to Steve Worrall's updated video and sound presentation at the 13th Annual Muskie School kickoff session. Steve will begin his session at 8:30a on 3/15/14, Waunakee, Wis. High School Auditorium. Some have said that the loudest lure in the water is a joined Believer. Does a double ten buck tail create sound, vibration or just water displacement? Maybe we will get some answers at this unique presentation. We hope to see you there. Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Is that "sound" as percieved by the human ear or also as viewed via analysis by an electronic instrument such as an digital storage oscilloscope (DSO). Muskies have both ears and lateral lines. Both respond to "sound", sound is a generic term. Muskies are very likely able to percieve frequencies we can't, especially lower frequencies, I'm just saying....actually I'm being a nitpicking geek because I think it matters. Dr. John New and Dr. Cheryl Coombs both have done some very enlightening research with respect to the sensory systems used by fishes, including vision, hearing and lateral line. I've said this before, I think it would be helpful to Steve's underwater research on lures as it would add a new dimension, e.g., the ability to visualize the complete frequency spectrum and the complexity of the "sounds" a lure makes while being retrieved. Most of our ears have some limitations (mine do), unless you have perfect hearing and even then perfect is only quantifiable via human standards. For those who are geeks or even technology challenged here's what I'm talking about. DSO have become mainstream in the digital and electronic world. https://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?NavPath=2,842,1018&P... As a electrical/electronics engineer who does power quality and forensic investigation of electrical system failures using waveform analysis this is something that would be very easy to do, e.g., hook the DSO up to the speaker terminals. I think you'd be surprised to see what you are or are not hearing. Don't get me wrong, I thinks Steve's research is pioneering.... Some lure manufacturer's may be doing similar research, but likely only on a specific product. The typical claims are it has rattles or it makes clacking noises or it gives off large vibrations. Its very hard to convey in a written format what a specific lure does, either visually or acoustically. For example a "Rattle Trap": Its a complex lure with both rattles and significant sound and vibration capability. Why is it such a effective spring time lure, smaller profile or "sound"/vibration or a combination? I think its probably the latter. If you're using a superline you can feel the vibration and vary its signature as you retrieve the lure. With most other lures, we're just guessing. Unfortunately, I'm going to the MilW. Muskie Expo that day. I have enjoyed hearing Steve talk about Muskies at other shows, e.g., where he was a presenter. If you don't have any plans for that day it should be a good day to learn some new stuff. It is a "Muskie School", so the primary focus is transfer of knowledge... I trust you guys will have a good time and a good turnout for the school. Have fun! Al | ||
