This might be a dumb question but...When you buy a spool of line and want to put half of it on one reel and half on the other how can you tell when you've reached the middle? I hate it when I have to waste a section of line because it is to short. I was thinking of reeling it on to a linecounter reel first, but maybe there is a trick to it that you guys know about! Any other re-spooling tips out there? Thanks...

I go to the local tackle store, with a bag of candy, and a empty spool, and get i cut up in 100 feet sections.

Strictly visual for me. This year I am putting on no more than 80 yards for my casting setups. I have wasted way too much braid putting on 100-125 yards over the years. And usually wind up wasting 40-50 yards of a 300 yd spool.

I guess Im brutal at estimating line left.

Trolling reels, much diff of course.

Here is an idea. Take your combo out to the park/backyard if its huge. Throw the longest cast you. Peel another 30 yards of line by hand, and mark the spool with a sharpie.

I use the line counter, as You stated. the braid spool lengths are always off a little so you might as well take advantage of their overage on the spools. I cut the Braid the desired length you want, then tape it or tie it to the reel you want it on. When the cut piece of braid is on, Simply tie on your backing on and fill your reel to where you like it. Then get a empty spool or a empty reel and wind it on ........ Once you have it on the Spool/ or reel Just tie it on to the reel you want the braid on and it will be perfect every time.... Mike

Clip on counters are unreliable, and using a line counter reel only counts the turns of the spool, so it can also be unreliable. I measured out distances in my yard with a 300 ft tape (100' extension cords will also work). Measure out the length of braid desired, spool it on your reel, tie on mono backing line and spool until full. Cut the mono off it's spool and put it back on the spool of mono (I use a drill to quickly turn the mono spool). Then put the braid back on it's spool. Attach mono, spool it up, tie on the braid and you're ready to go.

ARMusky addict Sorry to tell you but you are not correct....???????????? So you are saying a line counter reel counts the turn of the spool and not line out amount...TOTALLY WRONG so if your reel has a 27" line retrieve per turn of the spool...Your saying the line counter will say 1 for every 27" of line out ? So then when it says 10 on the line counter there would be 22 1/2 feet f line out......This is not the Case......... I do agree that the line counters are not precise but they are close enough to depend on.

I went out in the yard and measured 75 yards and put an eye screw in the tree. Now I just unwind line to the eye and then spool it onto my reel.It works for reversing the line also.so I get to use the line twice.

I think you misunderstood what he was saying. One turn of the handle on your reel might bring in 27" of line when the reel is full. After you let out a bunch of line though, the diameter of the line left on the reel spool is now less but when you turn the handle one time, the reel spool still makes the exact same number of revolutions as it did before, so you are now bringing in less than 27" of line.....until you get more line reeled in.
