I found some info online about using small paper clips through the nostrils instead of a rubber band. Does anyone do this? Any other quick home-made tips on getting the hook to quickly detach from the front of the bait? I was also wondering what makes these rigs safer for the fish. Never really tried live bait, but I may go soak a sucker in the river this weekend.

I typically have used the rubber band, with the occasional pre-fab clip that you just pinch open and stick into each nostril.
However, here's something new I just found and am going to try next year, from Naze Bait: http://www.nazebaits.com/products.html
Two unique things about this rig: #1, it's designed to be threaded through a hole you punch with a hole punch in the fish's upper lip (watch their video). Second, three trebles rather than two......
These are the folks that make the 'Livid Fish' lure, which I've never used, so I picked one of those up, along with the sucker harness.

I've used both the bait needle/rubber band method and also the clip-and-go style quick strike rigs, I personally like the rubber band method. It's easy, lower profile in loose vegetation, and the fish can't wiggle off. I bought a good bait needle set from Rollie & Helen's and you can pretty much use any leader with a snap and interchange different length hook-lines to the size of your minnow.

I like the shumway tackle one. I think it's the fuzzy clip or something with a piece of wire going into each nostril. I would say my hook up % is at 80% or better since I switched to these a rubber bands.

Hole punching a live sucker highlights the reasoning behind the KISS principle.

I make my own rigs and a much easier way is to simply put a small walleye hook on the front of the rig and hook the sucker just above the mouth w that hook...I use about a size 6 red walleye hook... rubberbands and all the other stuff I see on rigs is too much work! walleye hook works great...

I tie up my own as well. Smaller treble in nose with two other trebles on the side of the sucker. And for really big suckers, I may tie another lead and put another treble in the sucker. Mike Koepp showed me the way to making these rigs.

I keep my nose treble a little smaller than my side trebles, but still large enough. I use primarly smaller suckers and a lot of my fish are caught on the front treble due to head shots from the fish on smaller suckers.

Over the years, I have caught well over half of my muskies on dead suckers. As a result, I have found it quite productive to use a sucker that has just caught a musky. By punching a hole through the snout, you are able to "get back" most every sucker you set the hook on. In addition, I'd rather have three trebles in the most common area that muskies hit. I can't help but believe that if one of your three trebles is through the snout, your percentages are somewhat decreased. My two-cents....

Brad, I have also done the walleye hook like you are talking about. How do you attack the hook on the rig? One thing I found if you put it on the snap it does not pivot and swivel well with the snall eye. What I ended up doing was using a comaprable size treble and cutting two of the hooks off since the trebles have a much bigger eye and swivel on the snap much easier.

I also use the rubber bands, it's not that bad to rig them, takes longer than the nose hook but once you have done it a bunch, it goes quick.

The Shumway method was improved this year, over a great system last year!

Check out Larry Dahlbergs show, Hunt for Big Fish, it's the episode where he fishes live suckers for muskies. There are no hooks in the sucker at all only a wire through the nostrils. I think it is actually a salt water rigging technique not really sure. One thing for sure it works. Check it out.

We also run the small 'trout' hook up front for sucker attachment after trying most everything else. I bend the eye of the hook back 90 degrees and slide it through my coated cable or floro lead. Works great. I have a crimp lightly closed behind that hook, so I'm ONLY pulling the sucker by the little hook, which is the key to keeping the bait alive no matter what type of nose attachment is used. We call ours the newg(nooj) rig, developed by the (in)famous New G.

very true J, lighter weight of the rig the better.. less is more when it comes to sucker rigs..any sucker under 12" i just run 1 smaller treble to keep weight down... little suckers die a lot faster with lots of bling on them..and they swim around a lot better w light weight rigs on them. the little snaps break from time to time which is fine, just keep a bunch in the boat and replace them..the hooks will break too which again is fine....
