Posts: 49 | I realize that I am splitting hairs, and I do like to over analyze things and to 'match the hatch' perfectly sort of speak. From experience do you think that fish that prey on yellow perch can really tell the difference between perch and juvenile walleye? It's funny but I always assumed all these years that 'yellow perch' patterns were actually walleye colored lures and 'perch' patterns were more green+orange bellied lures. I just noticed that that wasn't always the case. Looking at internet photographs, walleye actually rarely seem to have that 'striped' belly pattern that I used to think was a classic walleye pattern. Most adult fish seem to actually be VERY inform in golden color. Maybe saugers are what muddy's the water sort of speak!?!? Do you have any input on this? Do you substitute perch patterns for walleyes and vise versa... any comments are appreciated. Edited by vpsaline 1/1/2014 10:52 PM

Posts: 1530 | ev ery body of water dictates coloration on perch/walleyes. northern walleyes blk/gold. southern great lakes silver gold green. perch weed perch more vibrant then sandy bottoms. bass also different colors. I have been painting these colors for decades. regional colors differ. plus on baits belly colors differ also. Edited by woodieb8 1/2/2014 4:36 AM

Location: Eastern Ontario | That would depend if were talking white bellied perch, yellow bellied perch, orange bellied perch, Lac Seul perch, St. Lawrence perch, brown perch, black perch, glitter perch, fire tiger (which I consider to be a hot perch ) jailbird ( which I consider to be a perch pattern ). Fancy colour and scale patterns attract fishermen which is the first step in catching a fish. The most important things are timing location action ( if it moves it's food )and size to some extent. Dr. Bruce Tufts of Queens University who as well as being a fisheries researcher fishes bass tournaments and for everything that swims said in a recent talk that the thing that had the biggest triggering quality was a barred pattern and that colour was secondary. This is probably why jailbird is so successful and works in pea soup algae bloom or the gin clear waters of the St. Lawrence. It has taken me 30 years to realise that I don't need 600 lures and I won't live long enough to get them all wet. Edited by horsehunter 1/2/2014 8:46 AM

Posts: 20263 Location: oswego, il | Perch spend their life on average being smaller and more numerous than walleye. Walleye eat more walleye than muskies do. I would look at the color of the bait and how it fits contrast wise to the water I am fishing, how the lure may present those colors while working the bait. Most lures don't even look like a fish let alone how they are painted. Edited by ToddM 1/2/2014 8:41 AM

Posts: 1530 | horsehunters hit the nail on the head... barred pattern. that's contrast apossed to the background color on the lure. here on st clair its standard practice on perch patterns. we all love the ultra realistic paint jobs but, theres always your meat and potato baits...water color is everything

Location: Eastern Ontario | Some builders and painters are doing beautiful paintjobs but I consider them artwork rather than anything actually needed to catch a fish. If they sell a lure they have done their job. Look at the paintjobs that Len Hartman put on his lures. Think what you will about the man and consider the times but he knew how to catch lots of big fish.

Posts: 1530 | once its the action. you can wander into water color. when guys learn to read water color they will have far better days..on lakes that can be stirred up or algae blooms baits that are not so hot can be the ticket.on lsc find the bait in the off water you find the skies. ya gotta send the message. that's the right bait.. here we all have our favorites.
