Hey everyone. looking for some input. i bought a used boat this fall. it has a nice terrova trolling moter and a lowrance hds7, gen 2 in the cockpit. i am debating between buying the LSS-2 structure scan side imaging for the lowrance, or putting a i-pilot capable gps bird on the front. can really only do one this year. so that being said, would you get more from the side imaging or the i pilot? having never used either I am debating which option would be the most useful? thanks for the thoughts.....
currently have a depth only bird on the front so the smaller mount is already there. was looking at the 788 ci combo.
thanks

I would go with the ipilot link if I could only have one. You can the use the follow the contour features to follow along any break lines. I have a side image unit and the ipilot link. I use my ipilot every single day, without fail. However, I may go days without paying attention to my side imaging, if I know the water well. The only bad thing about the ipilot link is that not all lakes are mapped out such that you can use the follow the contour feature. Also, you need a lake master chip to use follow the contour.

That said, I am no pro at either side imaging or follow the contour, so get some other opinions.

If you do more trolling/ open water fishing get the structure scan. If you cast shore lines all day get the I-pilot.

I have both. I'd do the I pilot link. But I mainly cast.

I have both the ipilot with ilink and the HB 998. I use the ipilot way more than the SI feature on the HB. I mainly cast and hardly ever troll but I absolutely love the ipilot! The electronic anchor, follow the contour, and many other features are awesome to use. My advice is to definitely go with the ilink first but make sure you have a graph that is compatible with it to use all the features or that wouldn't help you out at all. Not sure if the 700 series you're looking at has follow the contour or not.

hope that helps,

I have both .....just to throw something in the mix ....if you spend some time learning to use the si it can be very useful in locating bait and structure ,but is does require its playtime ......also I mainly cast ....if I had to choose one ipilot all the way ...lol

Can I suggest an iPilot capable, side imaging humminbird in the console? The iPilot link comes with a 30 foot ethernet cable and can network to any/all units in the boat. Then take the Lowrance, buy a new us2 adapter, and put that in the front. That way, you get both iPilot capabilities and SI capabilities, only having purchased one new unit. In the future, if the opportunity arises, you could get a new, networkable humminbird for the bow to replace the lowrance.
