Looking back at 2013, it was quite a year. Although I didn't have a great year of catching I had a great year of fishing! I purchased my first rig this year, see images in "lets see your rig" which was great. That allowed me to get out much more than ever before but more importantly, i got to take more people out fishing.

My Year of FIRSTs:
1. Married in January (hopefully first and last!)
2. Got my first boat.
3. Introduced 2 friends to musky fishing and both caught fish. 38.25" was caught during national alliance tournament and other (46") was sixth cast, ever, way out from boat.
4. Got the wife her first musky 29.5" (bless her soul for all her casting, 2 yrs worth)

lots more but these are relevant to muskie fishing. Anybody else experience any FIRSTs this year?

2013 was my first year of Muskie fishing, so it was full of FIRSTs! From my very first fish to my first fish on a surface lure it was a year I'll never forget. My old man even caught his first Muskie!

Among the many firsts, one stands out in my memory a little more than the rest. It was Mid-September and I'd talked my Dad into going out on the lake with me. He doesn't like to be in my little Jon boat for very long because it makes his back hurt. I told him we'd go out just a couple of hours before dark for a short outing. He was still warming up to the idea of Muskie fishing after three prior trips without seeing a fish.

We where chucking baits and I was trying to assure him that it was all worth it. I was trying to describe how insane it was to hook one in the "8" in a 12 ft Jon boat. "You literally end up taking a bath!", I said. He cracked a smile but I could tell he still wasn't sold on Muskie fishing yet.

About five minutes after talking about figure 8 Muskies, I thought I saw a gold flash below my DCG in the green, murky water. I told my Dad I thought one might be following me but I wasn't sure. As my bucktail got closer to the boat, I made an "L" and before I could even start an "8", a 40 incher came out of nowhere and latched onto me. Immediately after the hook set, the fish came thrashing up out of the water! My dad was still sitting down in the boat and was now eye to eye with a Muskie as it jumped! I led it around in a couple of circles and before long, she was in the net. We where both completely soaked and laughing about it.

I checked my leader out and started making casts in the general area where the fish came from. I glanced back to see my Dad now standing up and acting like he was actually Muskie fishing! Five minutes may have passed since we released the first fish and I heard my Dad say, "Fish!!" His rod was bent over and he'd hooked one! It did some nice tail dancing on it's way in and in no time we had another one in the net. Now I could tell he was having fun.

I felt like that trip was going to make or break my Dad on Musky fishing. Luckily, my Dad is now a Muskie fisherman. It could have gone either way that day. I'm glad a tiny window opened up out on the water that evening and my Dad was able to see what Muskie fishing really was.

Awesome stories and great starts congrats. You guys are lucky one for having a wife that will get out fishing (mine loves musky fishing) the second for getting time out with your dad that right there is priceless I hope you get the chance to make many more trips with him.

Great year for me as well. Bought my first boat, caught my first muskie plus lots more. Tried to put my wife onto her first muskie but it didn't happen. She's not much of an outdoors type person, she would rather work on her tan and sip a glass of wine than cast lures all day lol but maybe this year I can pass a rod over to her so she can land a fish.

First 50.
First 50 I've netted for someone else.
First time netting my own fish.
First fish on the 8.
A lot of new found muskie friends/partners. (is that a first?)
First time having a tooth stuck down to my bone.
First time feeling the pain of someone botching a net job.
First multi-fish day.
First time having a hobby drain my bank account worse than duck hunting.

I had a pretty great year for my second season. I hope I can keep it going next year.

I had surgery on my arm that was caused be musky fishing for the first time... probably not the last.

I got skunked for the first time (YES, THE ENTIRE SEASON... UGH) in my musky fishing career. I lost 18 fish for the first time in my life (YES, ALL THIS SEASON... UGH)

I got bit on my very own home made lures for the first time (didn't matter, didn't catch any of them anyway)

Lost the biggest fish of my life for the first time, Geeze I hope its the last too... But I doubt it...

WAIT.... Is this supposed to be about good first time stuff???

OHHHH, ... well, I got nuthin then. LOL

In all seriousness I had an awesome season, saw a lot of cool stuff. Learned some hard lessons on the water. But all to make me yet a better angler. Good or bad, I would not change anything about my season... (except that beast I lost that bent my bucktail in half, and loaded my rod like nothing I've ever seen. that one I would like to have back) All in all it was a blast. I can't wait for next season. Its unfortunate that the cabin fever is already setting in. Thank god for ice fishing otherwise I don't know what I would do with myself.

My two year old daughter got to see and touch her first (and second) muskie. Hoping to get a pic with a muskie and my newborn son this summer.

My wife got to hook her first one. Boatside, topwater, at night. Sadly, we didn't land it. Next year...

I broke the ice on a lake that I've fished for a few years. Went several years without landing one from that lake, then the day I landed my first, I landed three more. And then another on my next trip.

First bulldawg fish. (I know...)

First sucker fish. (Again, I know...)

First respectable one from shore.

After spending 8 days in 2012 "trying to fish muskies", which I was doing very poorly, 2013 ushered in a bunch of firsts.

Spent about $5,000 on gear to fish, at most, 20 days a year.
Caught my first musky, while trolling.
1st 50+, which was also my first musky.
Netted a musky for the first time, including netting a 50+ incher.
Caught my first musky while casting.
Took a buddy out and he caught his first musky, before I caught my first one casting.
Fished a weedline correctly and learned some new techniques.
Taught my daughter to use a baitcaster, now I need to get her a big fish.
Made some new friends and met a bunch of other musky nuts.
Admitted to others I am nuts for spending thousands to fish, at most, 20 days a year and only catch 5 fish.

I made a bunch of bucktails last winter and caught a handful of nice fish on them...so that's a first.

First trolling muskie this year. First open water fish too. Pumped to try more "precision" trolling next year.
