I had a friend ask me to re-do his Blue Gill that he caught over the summer, He was not happy with the colors the the mounting guy had done so I took on the challenged. Well here it is the fish was caught from deep water so it was very dark.. I will try and post the original.

So is it just me or does that look like a pretty rough mount to begin with?

I think I'd have been asking for a refund from the taxidermist on that one.

Very nice.
When my daughter and I were gill fishing this summer, she brought along her macro-lens and was taking pictures of the different color strains of gills we caught. We were on Vermillion, and noted 4 distinct variations of color. Some were purple in some areas while others were gray and blue. The classic gills with the orange throats had different base colors and scale colors. The coolest ones were the ones that came from deeper water and gave off a silvery flash when you reeled them in. Once they were in the boat, we could see a definite pinkish hue along their sides and throat. All of these pink gills were 8-9"+. Different strain or different food source? After an hour in the live well, the pink gills became more silvery while the classic dark barred gills took on a dark green hue.
As we looked over the pictures at the end of the day, I came to a conclusion that they all shared one common characteristic, all of them were delicious.

A definite improvement! If this is the first mount you painted, you did extremely well! Looks like the first guy painted it with rattle cans.
