Got a 3.8:1 low ratio ABU Garcia "cranking reel", and I'm looking for long rod recommendations to match it with for crank baits. What's the best bang for the buck value=wise in Long Rods today?

Doc,
I'm leaning towards the "Maina" series rods for the money. Many people have told me they are very reliable and about as cheap as any out there. I've actually thrown one several times but never brought a fish in on one. About 80-90 dollars in BPS catalog. I personally own 2 "Graphite Series" BPS rods with no problems but they are only available in shorter versions (6 1/2'). Hope this helps a little.

Hey DrMusky:
I just purchased about half dozen 8' rods. The best bang for the back is the All-Star rods: I got a 8' and a 8'6" (Both are Ex-Heavy Action) for about $105 a piece....I think. I got them from Thorne Bros. at the Chicago Show, so they might be a few bucks more now. But look around.

I also got a great deal on a 8' Ex-Heavy Lamiglas "Len Hartman" Series, a 7'10" Ex-Heavy G-Loomis, and a 8' Ex-Heavy St. Croix at the show too. These rods bought at the Swap meet though.

Always look around and find the best deals. Call up the shops and ask for a deal. They'll probably give it to ya.

I'm a St. Croix man, but have to admit the All-Star 8'ers are very sweet. I bought one from a friend this past fall, and love it. Very light, faster action than the Croix, and is going to be my heavy bucktail, surface, 8" Jakin' rod!!!! Check em out.

You don't always get what you pay for. The high end BPS rods are flashier that their basic rods but are not built any better! I had a handle fall apart and inside it was two spots of masking tape built up to match inside diameter of the cork. I ended up putting more tape inbetween the existing tapes and epoxied it back on, but boy was I disgusted.
I now am casting St Croix's and like the All Stars too.
p.s. BPS rods are all made in korea..BUY USA!

I gotta go with the St Croix Premiere.
Wish they'd make an 8' Avid.

8' Lamiglas is a very good choice. I have 3 of them and its really my main go to rod.

I don't have an 8' St. Croix but my 8' All Star rocks.

I used a 8' St. Croix Premier the first half of the year, then switched to a FigRig 8' Bucktail rod for the rest of the season.  I like the butt weight on the FigRig, very happy with the rod.  I do like the thicker and longer butt section on the St.Croix though.  Both are in the same ball park as far as price goes, and both have similar action to them

I put Bass Pro Shops counterweights on all of my rods. They really make a big difference.

I use a st.croix 7'6" classic cat fiberglass/graphite rod for cranks. They also make an 8' foot model for around $140.00 which is a great value for what you will get. This rod is also great for bucktails, but shines with useing cranks, Big cranks especially! Cast or troll! Quality!

Many thanks to all who recommended their favorite 8' long rod to match with my new ABU Garcia C4 Low 3.8:1 ratio cranking reel. Looks like the top choices are All-Star, St. Croix Premier, and the Lamiglass. Since I live way over here in far northeastern New York State, looks like a few phone calls to R&H's, Thorne's, etc. are in order! Many thanks again, guys

I was given an 8 ft. Shimano Calcutta rod for my 40th birthday. Not sure what it cost, but I love the way it performs.

Check it out before you buy.

DocM,
That Pete Maina rod weighs a ton. I'd recommend the 8' All Star. It's worth the extra $20.

I have also heard a lot of good things about the Fig Rigs. I was thinking about going with a St. Croix or All-Star, but am pretty set on the Fig Rig after seeing them in action.

Where does one buy a FIG RIG or ALL STAR 8' rod? Are they priced about the same?
