Location: Elgin, IL | Quick question:
Where should I look under the cowl of my 96 Johnson 150 to find my trim/tilt relay's?
My outboard will trim up, but won't trim down, (trying both switches). I hear a click, so I assume it's a relay issue. I wamt to swap them and try that out, just not sure what to look for.
Thanks, in advance. |

| They are 1" by 1" looking silver boxes, very similar to car relays. Ours were on the back of the motor. Switch them and see if that helps. If it does, I picked one up at NAPA or some other auto parts store for not much. |

Location: Elgin, IL | Thanks Chad. I found them on the front corner, Johnson did a nice job of making them easy to change.
Had I known how to find these, and how to switch them over, I would have been home ALOT earlier Saturday night. The MinnKota and 2 newer Interstate's still got me home.
I'm going to keep a spare on board from now on...I would suggest it to others.
Thanks again. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Mark, good advice! On my 98 Johnson 150, they are on the rear of the motor top-center between the top plugs w/ a black cover over them. BTW, mine are black plastic too, not metallic silver. I'd recommend that everyone get a operator and service manual for their motor, I keep mine in the boat when I'm fishing, especially in Canada. It has the instructions for lowering the motor in an emergency, e.g. on mine there is a hole with a slotted presure release valve on the left side of the tilt/trim assembly (viewed from the front of the boat). You need a flat tip screw driver (part of a basic tool kit). The manuals are a cheap investment.
To get the right manuals take the motor & serial # to your local Johnson/Evinrude dealer service parts department, they can order them for you.
BTW- Its a good idea to replace both when one fails, keep the other good one as your spare.
Have fun!
Al
