Going to try Minnetonka for the first time tomorrow or Saturday. Any ideas on cheaper motels close by? I am okay with a 70 to 90 dollar room. I have a Mn Lakemaster map on my Gps's, so I am assuming I can get by okay with the buoys possibly being out?? Also, what ramps would you recommend, are the docks in? Since I have never been on the lake, any suggestions?? Thanks

As of last Saturday all buoys were still out there. Some of the docks have been removed. Water temperature was at 47 to 48.

Wayzata would be a good choice for lodging with some options.
Grays bay ramp is typically gradual and friendly for most boats and there's other options close by if for some reason it's not.
You're close to main lake features like brown's bay & big island if you stay and launch out of Wayzata.
If it's slow, try the upper lake bays. Different water clarity & temps in some.
Some are fertile, some are sandy.
If it's warm enough to throw, channels/buoys should be money, especially the rocky ones.
Where you comin from, up north or outta town?

We are coming up from Iowa. We go up to Nestor Falls, LOW, quite often, was thinking about going there, too far for a 2-3 day trip, I guess. So, since we have been talking about going to Minnetonka for many years, we decided to try it tomorrow thru Sunday. Thanks for all the info, especially Sidejack! Thanks again!

I wouldn't spend much time looking for a hotel in Wayzata. Your best options would be a hotel in Plymouth, Red Roof or Holiday Inns. There are also some options near Ridgedale Mall in Minnetonka. Grey's Bay is a good launch option. The bouys are almost all out as of a couple days ago, so watch your chip. Your usual suspects regarding lure choices; plastics, phantoms and slow rolled blades. I would work the outside edge and check out any shallow sand/weed combinations as well. Or you can buy some suckers and fish like most everyone else lately. Good luck.

Maple Plains Motel

5329 Highway 12, Maple Plain, MN

(763) 479-1434

Americinn Long Lake

521 Willow Dr N, Long Lake, MN

(952) 475-4422

Fishing channel areas connecting various fringe lakes can produce some big surprises this time of year, especially under certain wind and current conditions.

Fished a good half day Friday with one big follow and one medium. I caught a 39" Saturday on a regular dog and my fishing partner lost a 50 plus at the boat, on some sort of rubber bait, not sure. One more small follow Sat.
Talked to guys at ramp at night that had real good luck with suckers. This was the first time for us on the lake. Very impressed with the structure of the lake, AND very impressed with how rich some of you Minnesotans are.....some very very nice lake "cabins" on the lake.

I don't think anyone considers anything on Minnetonka a "cabin."
