I was in Wal Mart today and seen they have an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000 mated up with a medium heavy Berkeley Lightning rod for 69.95. The reel said "the original" and 3 bearings on it. My question is, is the 6500C3 that much better of a reel, and how do you think it would do for handling Muskies? Just playing with it at the store it seemed like a real nice setup for the price, even the reel felt pretty good. I'm doing this on a budget and really wanted your guys opinion if this would be ok, or would I be that much better off getting the 6500C3 with a heavier rod. I know I've landed 30# fish on medium weight rods before so thought this might be an interesting one.

Thanks for all help. Mark

Hey Rockin SV,

I was in the same boat last year, trying to find a nice budget setup. In the end I went with an Abu C4 and Bass Pro Shops combo. I went with a Medium Heavy power rod, and while it never failed me (and actually performed much better than anticipated) its not enough rod to pull in a big one. The biggest I caught on it was just shy of 20lb's, and I could feel the blank in the butt section bending. Needless to say, for this year ive decided to just bite the bullet and buy a few nice rods that are up to snuff. All I know is, I dont think I would have been able to land a fish much bigger than the ~20lb'r without lowering the drag way down and letting it wear itself out.

Thanks for the reply Spieg. Do you get down to Webster at all? I'm from Indiana and thats where I end up going.

I live in southern michigan, so we fish most of the lakes around here (Bankson, Campau, Thornapple, Round). I live about 10 minutes from Bankson, so it gets most of my attention. That said, with the early season down there, I think me and a few friends are planning on heading down with the MMA on March 29th. Not sure what lake we will end up making it to, probably the closest one to Michigan. I cant wait to get back out on the water, winter is killing me!

I hear ya, winter is killing me too. It's a little ways down here, but I don't think Webster is much more than an hour to hour and a half from there. That said it is a VERY busy lake, though there has been some very large fish pulled out of there in the last year.
