Hi. New guy on here. Have fished for muskies in some capacity for years but am now breaking through into fishing for muskies almost exclusively. Last time I was out I had the realization that my net is a tad small in that I could barely get a 40 incher into it . Width is not that bad but the depth is to short. As I get deeper into the sport I have realized moreso than ever how important it is to do the least amount of harm to the fish and I feel like my net is a huge hinderance and will not use it again.

So my question is what size nets are all of you running? Brands? Also I don't want to sound cheap but I am on a college kid budget so if you have any value minded suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I know that you get what you pay for. As we all know muskie fishing can get expensive in a hurry. Any advice helps

If you like the size of your net and just feel the basket is too small, go buy a replacement basket from frabill or whoever.

This is something you could consider:

I thought about this but figured that if I am gonna upgrade my net might as well buy something bigger. Without trying to sound cocky and I do not plan this, but I figure that I should get something that can safely handle trophy fish... Just in case. At the very least for the safety of the fish. Still in the learning process on all this stuff.

I believe from Frabill standpoint most people look at one of the following depending on if they fish alone, with a partner, and a few other factors.

I know people also use Beckman nets but I'm not sure which ones.

Don't discount the replacement bag option too quickly.

If on your existing net the "width is not too bad" then lash on the replacement bag VonBraun linked to with zip ties and you're good to go IMO. I was in your situation 15 years ago and put a deeper and fin-friendly beckman bag on a marginally-wide hoop and it worked great for a long time (and it wasn't as deep as the linked frabill bag--that thing's 60" deep, it would be sweet). Turned out what I thought was marginally-wide was fine. Plenty wide to net them head first, anyway. Got a power catch big game a few years ago, and it's nice, but in a pinch I'd use my old one with no hesitation.

Thanks for the advice, I am gonna get on that right away. Water temps are dropping and soon will be out of the non lethal range. I hope to be back on the water soon!
