I loosen the drag at the end of the season. Never had an issue when I tighten it up again. I'm using 6501's so not the most expensive reels around but very easy to keep in top shape and rebuild if necessary.

I loosen mine after every trip out, I've never had the issue you describe. I use a mix of Toro's, Curados, and Calcutta's.

I loosen both the drag and the anti-backlash after each outing.

I used to do that after each outing. Now only at the end of the season. No issues so far and I fish a fair amount.

Me too, and I have never had a problem with drags sticking or slipping.

Look at an exploded spec diagram of your reel. If your drag system includes a set of opposing concave stainless steel "washers" then it seems clear that you should release the tension while not on the water in order to maintain peak performance while you are fishing. A big and common mistake is to flatten those washers and then use oil to somehow make things right. From another perspective, overlubrication of the drag washers leads folks to tighten the drag such that those concave washers are flattened and the drag system never works right until the the reel is rebuilt again with new washers and proper lubrication. da deal.

I no longer lock it down with today's super braid, 9 foot rods and sharp hooks, I let the drag work for me. I still do back it off at the end of the day. BR

We have a pile of reels between multiple species and four of us fishing + guests. I set drags up in the spring and loosen drags and spool every fall on all of them. Otherwise unless messed with by someone the drags are set all year. I keep the reels oiled and go through most of them for cleaning and oiling in the winter. If we have three go down during the season, that's about top's. Dirt & no oil is the "reel" killer. Some of the Garcia's & Diawa's have been with me since the early 1980's .

Absolutely! Back it off at the end of each day of fishing. A good habit to get into. In the 20+ years or so of doing this I have never had a drag problem. No flat spots, no herky-jerky, no nothin'.

That. I loosen the spool brakes as well. Never had a problem, aside from occasionally forgetting to tighten them back up again the next morning.
