Location: New Jersey | So, I am noticing that my new batteries are drawing a lot of juice when I barely use them for a few hours on a light and variable wind day.
The batts are new, so I am thinking the charger may be losing its mojo? Its a dual pro 2 bank sportsman addition that is 10 years old.
How much should each bank be pushing out in terms of volts if I plug it in and put a meter on it?
Any other way to test??
thoughts?
thanks, Rob |

Location: Not far enough north! | Rob, You need to check the amps the charger is putting out on each bank. A fully charged battery should read about 12.8v after you unplug the charger and let rest for a while. If you can't measure amps it would be hard to tell how fast the batteries are charging. A 2 amp rate will bring a batteries voltage above 13 volts while charging so that can be misleading.

| A charger is either going to work or not. if you have a multimeter, you can measure the charging current on each bank. Do your lights indicate full charge? If so, then each battery should measure 12.6-12.7 volts as mentioned. |

Location: WI | Farmer Rick is right. If you are getting the correct voltage after a full charger(12.6+\-) then you should put an amp clamp on your wires going from the charger to battery and check the amperage. Make sure that you check amperage when in a charging state; meaning the charger is giving a full charge (red lights), not maintaining( blinking green lights). This ensures that the charger is putting out max amps. If you do not have a multimeter with an amp clamp you can buy one at a home store for less than fifty Bucks. I leave on in my tools on my boat. You will have electrical issues and will be hard pressed to figure out what they are with out one.
Good luck. Andy. State certified sparky. |
