I am planning to fish some 5-7oz lures on a rod made for 3-8oz lures (Heavy action 9' rod) and usually I only throw 2-4oz lures.

My question that I am needing help on is what pound test line should I plan to throw these 5-7oz lures on? Can I use 50# or 65#?
Do I need to plan to go to 80# for these size baits to minimize any potential of loss of a bait if a possible backlash happens?

I would just go 80 to avoid any issues. The cost of the line won't really be different, and the minor difference in diameter won't matter either. Better to be safe then sorry.

I used to have 50 & 65 on my 5500 Abu's back in the day throwing Harasser bucktails and jackpots; with most backlashes resulting in a flying lure. Not to mention on snags or hook sets the line would dig in or bury in the spool; resulting in a backlash if you don't catch it. 80# was a hug improvement.

That small line did fine just there's more insurance with 80.

Go 80# no question. I ran both 50# and 65. Both cost me baits like dawgs and lure weights you mention. Knock on wood I've been running 80# for going on 4 full seasons and it's awesome.

I would run 100 lb Cortland Master Braid, no matter what bait your throwing...especially if your throwing rubber...

5 to 7 oz....better go for 80lbs! I know some use 100 lbs! I use 65 lbs for 6 inch crankbait like Grandma and small bucktails. I use 80 lbs most of the time from large bucktail to jerkbait! I use Power Pro!

The thing I like best about cortland master braid is how much easier it is than power pro to get a back lash out.

I use 80# on every thing expect trolling rods and pounder set up that I run 100 on those

Like everyone else said, 80 or more is the way to go. I've never used less than 80, but fished with somebody that used 65 for a while. Even small spinnerbaits snapped that line with a good backlash.
