Location: Athens, Ohio | Howdy. My kid is going to school to learn to be a webmaster and is looking for project ideas. He's asked me to post a question: what is one thing you would do to improve your business by using the Internet if you just had the time/skills/program to do it? Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks, m

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Mikie, Over this past winter I tought myself how to build my own website using some software I purchased. I used to pay a web host/design service for the initial design and hosting of my sight but their annual renewal fees were much higher than what I thought I was getting in return. Now adays I think most guides or tackle manufacturers need a site as "point of contact" for potential customers to check out their services. There are some that are fairly extravagant but I don't know that it's necessary. What I would really like to do is work on search engine placement. I can pay for this service but there has to be a way for guys who are "somewhat" computer literate like me to get the job done, without incurring much expense..?????? I hope this helps a little...

Location: Athens, Ohio | It helps a lot, thanks. I know so little about this stuff, but it seems like they are making programs to do it yourself when you used to have to know program language. I think he's just looking for demo work to build up a resume, and wondered if there was a market in places I hang out. I gotta get out on the water soon. Drove by Salt Fork and Piedmont lakes today in NE Ohio. Both good muskie lakes and both frozen over. Winter's gotta end sometime! m

Posts: 355 Location: Silver Lake, WI | Mikie, I second Mark's point about search engine placement. Creating the website is the easy part. Coming up with a sure fire method to have your site be the first one that comes up when someone is doing an internet search is the hard part. Ease of use for the consumer/internet searcher is also key. Your site needs to flow well and be easy to use/browse. Before it goes to the net, you need to check it with as many of the main browsers that are available out there to make sure the site comes up and looks right on all browsers. If it doesn't work on a particular browser, you will be losing potential customers. Also, keep in mind the different types of services (i.e. telephone lines, 56K modems, cable, etc....). If it takes forever for a site to load over a standard phone line, people won't be coming back to the site. My $0.02.
