Last week I was fighting a mid 40" fish where it came boatside and then made a power run away from the boat. I released the spool to thumb the line instead of using the drag, old habit with other reels. When I engaged the reel I couldn't take in line. It was making an intermittent click, click, click, click sound about 3 revolutions so I released the spool again and re-engaged. After that it worked again and the rest of the day.

The reel didn't make any abnormal noises during the fight before or after the episode where I couldn't take in line. It has only been used for about 30 hours. Anyone think this would be a defect or is it best to just rely on the drag?

I can't comment on the reel and what might have happened there. I would suggest though that you just rely on the drag...........saltwater fish with literally 10 times the fight of any freshwater species are landed entirely on the drag. Everyone has their own opinion on how to set the drag but I like it pretty tight for setting the hook and after that I will back off a little bit so that the hook won't pull loose if the fish is barely hooked. Good luck.

On the new Calcutta D reels there is only 1 pin on the spool where as the TE reels had 2 pins so the D reels will not engage under presure. Use the drag, I set my about 80 % from lock down and if I need to lock down the spool I will thumb the spool.
