Posts: 383 | Has anyone done this? I'm hearing that it gets crazy-expensive. If anyone has insights or suggestions for keeping costs down (other than cutting it in half--ouch) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | FedEx is your best bet. If anything happens with UPS you will have a hard time getting them to pay out insurance. FedEx is a dream to deal with if you have any issues, UPS is a nightmare. If you can find a tube that is 108" or under the cost is about $20 with FedEx. Even if its 109" they may let it go..... If you need a 9' tube just get one at a carpet store and cut it to length. James

Posts: 383 | So...what I learned today... A Big Nasty is 107.5". UPS is good to 108 and a little under a half". Over 108.5" and it has to go freight. $$$$$. So, if you're careful to minimize the packaging, it can be done through UPS for under $25. Ironically, after all that the sale fell through, so this was all just a learning experience/exercise in futility. When I relist the BN tomorrow, I'm going to emphasize local pick-up! Thanks to all who replied!

Yep, that's what I said, up to 9' and they'll ship it. Not all rods ship for $30, it depends on the length and where they're going. I ship UPS all the time. They've nailed me every time for anything over 108- even 1/2". I'm not sure if it's the local distribution center or what, but they don't budge at all on length. And here's the deal, unless you are using a 6" or larger tube and leave 3" at each end, if they break it, they won't pay because it wasn't packaged to their specs. Also, if damage occurs, you don't deal with UPS. They have a 3rd party they send you to. I found all of this out the hard way. I built a sweet custom for a Muskies Inc fundraiser and UPS busted the rod, charged me to have it returned, and then sent me to a 3rd party out of TX. When it comes down to it, they will argue and nit pick until they find something that you did wrong so they don't have to pay. I got into an argument with the lady about what brand of packing tape meets their requirements. I'm thinking of taking James' advice and sticking with Fed-Ex. jeremy

LOL they have lost well over $50k from me in the last 3 years due to not paying out on a simple $16.11 claim. I know another company that moved over $1.6M/yr in shipping after UPS did not take care of them on a few similar insurance claim issues. UPS horrible customer service in my opinion. FedEx and SpeeDees is the way to ship. Good luck and wrap your guides well and the tip well for shipping. Any shipping company is rough on long tubes.
