I bought a new 5.4 Nacl this year and have been very impressed with how it runs. I currently have it on an Okuma xhvy 8'6". I also have an Okuma hvy 8'6" that I am looking to change the reel on. It has a C-3 6500 and I was thinking about upgrading it to something different. Anyone have any suggestions on what would compliment the nacl? Does it make any sense to get another 5.4 on the lighter rod? Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure I'm making the connection on why or how a reel you are considering for the second rod needs to compliment - or has anything to do really - with the NACL you put on the first rod? Really depends more on what you are looking to use that second outfit for.

I guess what I have come to learn with my set ups are that the nacl can handle anything in my box. I mainly use it for blades, larger cranks/jerks, and rubber. The lighter rod I use for top water, lighter baits, and gliders. I am not a huge fan of the 6500 and was looking for advise on a reel that would be similar in performance to the nacl. I'm just not sure that a 5.4 is what I am looking for. I apologize for confusing first post. I should have stated more clearly what I was throwing with what.

Maybe for the topwater, lighter baits and gliders consider the NaCl50 in the 6.4 or whatever higher speed they offer. If you like the reel's performance then this combo should be a winner as well.

The NaCl hs is awesome for topwaters blades upto 8's gliders jerks and rubber to name a few. For what you mentioned the NaCl hs would be my choice.

100% Agree with Propster.

If you like how the NACL performs then it only makes sense to get another one. But like Propster said. maybe get the one in the 6:4.1 ratio. A little bit more pick up, not as much power. Good for, smaller blades, topwaters, gliders, all jerks. That is what I would do. The 5:4 ratio is by far the best all around NACL reel. But the higher gear ratio might be a good option for you. as you said I think it would be a good "compliment" to your other NACL

Thank you for the advise. Are there any other reels out there in the 6.4 ratio that would be a little more cost effective?

You can look into getting a Shimano Curado 300EJ

The Abu Garcia Revo Toro HS is not much more "cost effective," but it is slightly cheaper. I currently only have two toros; one winch on a Fenwick XH rod and the HS on a Musky Innovations Med-Heavy rod. I originally put the winch on the XH Fenwick rod thinking that it would be the the cat's meow for double-tens and also do ok with dawgs and medussas. One thing I QUICKLY learned is that the same rod/reel combo I have for rubbers is definitely not the same combo I would use for big bucktails.

If I could, I would have another HS on a separate rod for rubbers. You will greatly appreciate the faster HS or any faster reel for that matter to quickly pick up the extra slack from pumping rubber baits. The winch is super nice with the big bucktails I must say though.

My vote would second most people above on it is more specific to what you want to do with the set up and if you did want another "faster" reel, I would compliment it with a Toro HS IMO. Great reel for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, topwater, rubber, jerks, etc.. My winch only gets used with double tens and the occasional, yet still unsuccessful double 13s. I have never used a shimano reel so I can't give a good comparison on the reel that FAT-SKI suggested. I am sure it is a nice reel as well.

I have 2 nacl's one in 5.4 one in 6.4 Ratios. I have found that with these two reels set on the rods I have that I can throw anything in my box. Before I was running up to 4 rods in the boat . The combination of quality rods and reels made it so I could reduce the set ups I needed in the boat.

Thanks for all the info guys. It looks like a 6.4 reel is in my future.
