Posts: 477 Location: Iowa | I had the family out doing some cruising yesterday. On 2 different occasions, with the key off, my trim motor operated by itself for 1-3 seconds. My first thought was water getting into something, but I'm not real convinced of that. Anybody ever have a similar situation? I'm not great at tracking down electrical problems unless they are a little more obvious. Which reminds me of another thread I need to ask a question in. | ||

Posts: 279 Location: Central Wisconsin | ^^^^ Sounds like a relay might have gotten stuck. About $16 a piece. Cheap insurance to change them both. | ||

Posts: 1096 Location: Hayward, WI | Phantom trim is usually a bad switch. Either on control box, motor cowling or if boat has one on the bow panel. | ||

Posts: 477 Location: Iowa | My first thought was a switch. Haven't really looked at it yet. Will have it out for a while tomorrow and see if it repeats. I'll get the repair manual out and start looking through the wiring schematics this week. | ||

Posts: 899 | I had a switch go bad 2 years ago, did the phantom trim up thing. Had to unplug the battery when not in the boat to prevent the motor from frying. Pretty easy to switch out yourself, but it was tough for me to find the part. | ||

Posts: 477 Location: Iowa | It actually did it yesterday again. I backed away from the dock after dropping Chad off to get the truck and while I was waiting it operated for about a second. There is a round solenoid on the front of the motor that could be getting water when backing up and dropping off plane. The other 2 times were shortly after coming off plane. Thinking water might be getting in something. Might just run the hose over different areas while it sits in the yard and see if I can make it happen. Edited by Lone Stone 8/12/2013 6:20 PM | ||

Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | I just had the EXACT same problem a month ago during a 3 week fishing trip. This is what we did. 1. We thought it was a stuck relay so we changed the relay out. Still happend. 2. Now we started to think it was a switch. Unplugged the one on the motor. Still happened. 3. Now we start to think (when is this happening? We determined it was early in the morning when dew was on the boat or after a rain. (We taped a plastic bag over the shifter on the console) It never happened for the next 2 1/2 week. When I got home I got the switch and changed it out (it is kind of a pain). The other thing I did is put a (automotive heavy duty battery switch on my main battery so I can shut everything of when I am not attending the boat) Your problem my be different, but it sure sounds like a switch. When I talked to the dealer about it he said they actually replace a lot of switches. I hope this helps. | ||

Posts: 477 Location: Iowa | Thanks btfish. My process of elimination has narrowed it down. I did notice where the wires go into the trim motor, it looks like there are some cracks in the coating. Think I'll try some silicone over a couple areas and see what happens next time out. Thanks for all the replies! | ||
