Posts: 2 | Hi I am upgrading my trolling motor to a terrova 80 lb, replacing a 55 lb power drive. Going from a 12 volt to 24 volt system, is my current wiring going to be sufficient for the increased load. I have a 2002 tuffy esox magnum with factory installed wiring. I tried the search feature but couldn't find any info on this. Thanks Dave

Posts: 208 Location: Sun Prairie, WI | someone correct me if im wrong but isn't the load the wires see actually smaller with a 24v vs a 12v system. The higher the voltage the less the amperage draw?

Posts: 256 Location: plant earth | not so much according to ohms law. lets say 12volts 1 ohm= 12amps. now just do the same 24volts 1ohm= 24amps. im not being a smartass either just dont want to see someone use a smaller conductor and have a possible fire or damage to equipment or themselves.

Location: Eastern Ontario | I'm kind of in the same position as Haney and want to upgrade to an I pilot on my 17 foot tin bass boat. My 55 pound thrust has always been adequate and rarely run at more than 50%. So now the question should I stay 12 volt 55 pound I pilot with 2 batteries in parallel or go 24 volt 80 pound I pilot with 2 batteries in series. What are the pros and cons of each? What would give me the longest running time? My wiring is heavy enough for either.

If your boat has smaller wire, replace it. Get the 80 lb. you wont be sorry.

Posts: 19 | Your Tuffy will be fine with the 24 volt system. The 80lb at 24 volt will be less current than the 55lb at 12 volt. Ohms law.

Posts: 256 Location: plant earth | Here's a chart. Looks like you need 8 to 6 gauge wire for max performance. If its equipped with that your good Edited by jdeezay74 7/1/2013 11:21 AM

Posts: 5874 | sworrall - 6/30/2013 2:29 PM Yes. Yes, you change to the appropriate plug on the TM cable. I think the 12V is a maroon color. 24V plug is Black.

Have to apply the correct formula. That isn't it. 24V TM will draw less current than a 12V version at a given thrust. The wiring in a Tuffy is adequate for either 12 or 24V TM's. Make sure you have the wiring protect by properly sized fuses or Circuit Breakers. Edited by Shep 7/1/2013 3:58 PM
