Posts: 369 | Hello everyone, In a few weeks I will be heading up to Wisconsin and will be fishing for Muskie. I will plan to go during all times of the day and will be fishing mostly from boat. My neighbor will be taking me out to catch my first Muskie to. I wanted to say thank you to all of you who have helped me with advice and lures and this year will hopefully be the one I catch my first muskie. Any last minute tips would be appreciated and also any information on the best time of the day to use a specific type of lure. Thanks again for all the help everyone and I wont have wifi up there but when I come back I will post the pictures if I catch my Muskie, Thanks again and tight lines everyone! -Zachary

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | Best tip I can give... Just go there to have fun, don't put so much emphasis on catching a fish. Don't get me wrong we all hope that you do catch one or five, and hope they are all PIGS. But if you don't catch one, don't get discouraged or down on yourself. This is a tough sport with tough fish and even tougher anglers. Some guys put in multiple years before they catch their first musky. Currently I am on year 5 and have yet to boat a 50"+. So just keep at it, you will get better and more confident with time.

Posts: 97 Location: Milwaukee, WI | Muskie fishing can be very humbling. Don't get frustrated or down on yourself if you struggle to catch (or even see) fish. Enjoy the time on the water and remember that any cast could be "the one".

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | Zach, Get a good night's sleep!!! After that first day this won't be a problem but... Sounds silly but lighten up on the beer consumption just a little too. It'll pay off the next day. Have a great time and remember to keep it fun. Sometimes that's tough when nothing shows. In my flyfishing world there's a little bit of prose that says "Many men fish their entire w/o realizing it's not the fish they're after!" Ya, well...That's true, to an extent *G* Think about it. Have a blast man. Looking forward to a trip report.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | You should have a lot of fun. What part of WI are you going to? If you go in with the mindset that it will be a great outing if you catch something, and a fun time if you don't, you should be all set. Like others have said these aren't the easiest fish to catch at all times! Some days a couple will just about throw themselves in the boat though as well. For actual fishing tips: The water will probably be pretty warm by then. I tend to fish deeper, with my baits running 8-15 feet down. If you are fishing shallower structure, the best bites might be morning and evening though you can catch them all day. If fishing shallow, fast moving bucktails are a good bet. If deeper, try some crankbaits or rubber baits like Bulldawgs. Stay focused. Watch for follows a couple feet behind and below your bait. They will show up or bite as soon as you put your guard down it seems! Do a figure 8 after every cast, even if you don't see a fish. Sometimes they shoot out of nowhere and smack your bait. If you have a follow and the fish turns off and disappears keep doing the 8 for at least a minute. I've had many many fish do this, only to come back and hit the figure 8 I was still doing. Have fun and good luck!

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | After getting your butt handed to you for a few days (and you will, first trips are like that) head over to Day or Tigercat, tie on little popper or slash bait on your lightest set up and catch some bass and mini-muskies. Good luck!

Looking back to when I started 5 years ago, the most important thing about any trip on the water is always trying to learn. You can learn from the experiences you have on the water, or the people you are fishing with. Try to remember what worked, and what didnt't. After you have established that, ask yourself why what you did worked/didn't work. That is the way to become a better fisherman. Everyone is always learning, but if you make the most of your outings in this fashion, you soon will have LESS trouble catching muskies (because there is no such thing as NO trouble catching these fish). Good Luck.

Posts: 96 | This is my 6th season muskie fishing and I have taken two friends during that time that both had caught their first before I had myself. I went to Wisconsin on the 5th of june and caught one each day for 3 straight days. No giants but a fat 36.5" for a first fish. My pics are posted in the destination section under Chippewa falls guide.

Posts: 369 | Thank you all for the tips and encouragement. I will be bringing all of the Muskie lures that I have with me and be fishing early to late each day if I am able to do so. Ill try to keep a healthy mindset and get to bed early. I plan to catch my first Muskie on Lake Winter this year. Again, Thank you all! -Zachary
