I have fished Grand Traverse Bay for muskie... talk about a super low density population. I heard threw the grapevine a certain "someone" thought I was nuts fishing there too… okay, okay maybe I am LOLJ So that's what I was doing wrong there, got to spool up some 8lb test next time! Congratulations to the skipper and angler, great that they released it!

The Swan - 6/25/2013 9:18 AM And some people need 80 lb. superbraid to land a 40? Lets try this again, its not the fish its the hard pounding baits. Not everyone uses bass baits for muskie.

Location: Green Bay, WI | muskyhunter47 - 6/25/2013 7:52 AM very nice fish just don't like how there holding it. could it be a record for 8# line? The article says that the record fish (caught last Fall) was also caught on 8-lb test. The vertical hold, while certainly not recommended, is probably not going to hurt the fish if done for a relatively short time. The literature I've read on it basically states that if the fish is still strong enough to contract its muscles and supports itself (at least to some degree), then it might not be as harmful as we seem to think. Of course the concern with this fish is the length of the fight and how stressed it might have been afterwards. So yes, I certainly agree that it would be best not to be holding a big fish vertically like that--especially after a lengthy fight. It is what it is I guess, and all we can do by talking about it is to remind people why it might not be as good for the fish as we'd like. That being said though, I doubt that there are many bass anglers reading hard-core musky forums, but that's an entirely different discussion as to how we can help educate those folks. Maybe some signage at the landings might be an effective method? TB
