Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Buzz Baits

I used to catch muskies this time of year on Bass size buzzers on area lakes in N Wisconsin fishing slop. I had Brian make up some larger models, just a size bigger than the store bought models.

Anyone else using buzzers with success this time of year? If so, any conditions that seem to be better or worse for buzz bait use?

I used to fish a shallow water reservoir in Ohio for tigers using buzz bait type lures at this time of year with a fairly high success rate. My favorite was a chrome weedwing with a porkrind trailer cranked about as fast as my equipment would allow. It was often deadly for the first and last hour or so of daylight. Lunker Lure buzz baits were also pretty effective. Days with a slight breeze (but not a severe chop) seemed a bit better than flat water.

I haven't really used buzz baits, but probobly should. Early this spring I was fishin in my favorite weed bed and I saw some bass guys get one heck of a strike. and caught a 39 incher. What are some of the best ones to use?

Buzz baits (but musky sized) are just killer AFTER DARK on high pressure lakes with lots of boat traffic. You can cover a ton of water, almost never get snagged up, and the fish can really zero in on the target. as always, wait until you feel the weight of the fish to set the hook!

HH:
I personally have never used a buzz bait with anything but a metal blade.

Last year I had 7 follows in about an hour bass fishing and I think that was about the last time I have bass fished. Been musky exclusive since. No takers that day. Bought a musky buzzer and not happy with it as the sound of the metal blade makes a huge, huge difference in baits (from my bass experience). Now my buzzer is not a confidence bait-what about violent strike buzzers--are they out there yet????

Here's the Violent Strike Brian made for me. I have one with a treble, and one with a 7/0 single stinger hook, for open water and for slop.

I find the bait to be pretty good on the hook-up if one follows the wait-till-you-feel-the-fish-rule.

The bait is 8" long total, and runs nice and slow if one wants that. Anyone else using a bait like this? When? Where? Under what conditions?[:0] [8)]

I'll make up a few new buzzers this week and put some pictures on this post and our site.

divani,
This is the thread, pic is there of the one I used a treble on to fish rough water over the cabbage on Pelican here in the US. I use a 7/0 trailer on the weedless model.

thanks steve! That's more or less how I'll make some soon from 1/2oz and 3/4oz spinnerbait blanks. Maybe I'll tie the latter ones with bucktail to keep them up higher in the water.

I had good luck with the custom boogerman last fall in the reeds and millfoil. The only problem is that I couldn't keep anything hooked up! They're a great bait in the thick stuff and my goto lure in the reeds.

Now does anyone have any tricks to increase hook-ups on these baits?

Yes, I have pretty good success with hookups on the Violent Strike models I use. the trick is to WAIT to feel the fish, and set hard only one time. A big single hook can cut a pretty big opening with the superline hooksets, so one sharp jab usually does the trick.
