1)What should clients bring on the guide trip with you?

And!

2)What do you think they should leave at home?

I kinda like Sponge's idea..[]

Let's see there are the obvious..

Camera, sun screen, polarized glasses, appropriate clothing.

I also encourage them to bring their own rods and tackle. I feel I can be of more value to them in helping them to sharpen their skills by learning how to better work with their own gear. One of my goals is to hopefully send them home with a little more knowledge and tricks up their sleeve. Of course I let them use my tackle if they want to try it out, gives them an opportunity to try something different from what they might own and also helps me to "show and tell" my sponsors products.

Probably some of the most important things they can bring...
A smile, positive attitude, an open mind, and the desire to have fun...[8)]

And Don't forget your fishing license...[]

Best,

Curly

Mark has hit the nail right on the head with his list. I also agree that the client will probably more comfortable with his own equipment. The one thing that I would emphasis is the attitude. Bring along the proper one. If you are not going to take the help and advice of the guide, you should just rent a boat. Remember that the guide is going to try his or her level best to help you have a great time on the water. Listen to them, keep that attitude positive and above all, enjoy. Quite simply it's your day. Don't do anything to ruin it for yourself.

Jason, great question. All that I ask my clients to bring is a license, proper clothing for the day, and a positive musky catching attitude.

The only thing that I don't want a client to bring is a bad attitude[:)]

Like Mark, I encourage them to bring their own tackle because at the end of the day, they will be using their own tackle. I do provide all the tackle that necessary for a trip, but one nice thing about fishing with a guide is that he/she can show a client how to use his or her tackle. God bless.

The responses above are excellent. I don't really have much to add to them.

Bring only a couple of your favorite baits in a small container. I have had people bring 2 and 3 boxes apiece only to end up throwing my baits all day. If you are going to spend the money to hire a guide, I suggest using his/her baits as much as possible. That way you get a feel for what he is using and have him/her explain and show exactly how to work it.

Bring one rod, two MAX. I have had people bring 4 and 5 rods a piece, only to break one in the excitement of catching fish.

Positive attitude is what makes or breaks a trip in my opinion. No matter how good the guide is, he/she can't make these fish bite. After a couple of hours of fishing and not having any action, it seems even the self proclaimed "veteran" muskie fisherman can cop an attitude. One of my most memorable days was one where the guy caught a 32" fish in the first half hour and we raised 6 others (four over 40"). Total for the day was 12 follows, two in the boat (32" - him, 38" - me). He still had the audacity to complain most of the afternoon, even commenting on how could anyone guide for these fish when you don't catch any. How I didn't blow a gasket is beyond me.........

Several great responses, so I won't repeat, attitude is a must and lots of questions. I too, think folks should bring rods and reels they are used to.

Bring a few confidence baits, but leave the monster box home there is only so much room in the boat.

Good luck, Murph
