Subject: Ranger 618VS Prop Help

Some questions on props, just keep in mind I know little to nothing about props, so please educate me along the way.

The boat is a Ranger 618vs with an Evinrude Ficht 150 on the back of it. From what I have been reading on other forums this set up should right around 60 mph. Right now with one person full trimmed out and WOT it does 47 mph on gps, and with two people and full of goodies and gas it does about 45 mph. It does get out of the hole very fast though.

The previous owner had somebody do work to the prop he said. It looks like the edges have been ground on.

Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction!

Hiya,

What kind of RPM's are you getting at full throttle with just you fully trimmed?
Also, what is the pitch and diameter of the prop you have now?

Both of those will make it much easier to get on a path for a prop. I'll definitely help you out if I can...

The gauge reads right around the 6k range. I have no idea on pitch. I can take some pictures and put them on herr

14.5 x 22 is what it says on it. 22 pitch 14.5 diameter

I think the two people stating 59 & 60mph are full of it. High 40's low 50's is the norm.

Maybe timmy has NOS.

The 618's have more of a bass style hull then the 1825's. Maybe that has something to do with it? Correct me if Im wrong tho

I am also interested in this, will post my current prop info in the morning. I have the same boat with a 135 opti. I have seen 50mph before when I'm getting low on gas and by myself. I've talked with quite a few other 618 owners who do get 52-55 pretty regularly, even with the same motor. I've got a stainless 4 blade.

Hi Again,

Did a little number crunching on the numbers you gave me. Figuring the Ficht has a 1.86:1 gear ratio (for what I could find...please correct me if I am wrong) and a max RPM of 5500 (again, please correct me if I am wrong on this), your 22 pitch prop would get you 60 mph with 10% slip. Now...using your speed in this case, your slip is roughly 30%, which has me wondering a couple of things:

First, if the prop has been worked on, it may have had pitch changed, and if it has been shaved down in diameter, would lead to higher RPM values but lower speed. If the prop had a file taken to the blades at some point, it could be creating more slip duo to how things have been filed down. Do you have any pictures of the blades you can take and post?

Next thought is if the prop has seen better days, I'm wondering if you might have a bad hub, where the prop is slipping on the hub, thus giving you higher rpms, but not the speed.

From a very rudimentary standpoint, I think your pitch is about right, but if the prop is in great shape, I wouldn't hesitate to try a 24 pitch and see what happens. Sometimes the prop is just not matched to the rig very well and tons of slip come in to play.

Since it is an OMC product, if you can get a hold of an OMC raker in a 22 or 24 pitch, I'd say try them. If the 22 pitch gives you better numbers than yours, it very well could be your prop is not matched well, or has something else wrong with it. If you create same numbers on the 22, try the 24. That should lower your rpms by about 400 putting you right around the top end of your rpm range (again, if my numbers are correct abobve).

Where in the Metro are you?

I agree with this...I was running a Ranger 185 bass boat a few years back with a 175 Yamaha on the back and could hit low 60's here and there with the right waves and weight in the boat. I would not expect a 150 to get you to 60 in your current setup, sounds unreasonable. Don't lose too much sleep over your top end speed. High 40's, Low 50's is plenty fast enough.

I have a 618vs with a 08 yamaha F150. I have a SS 3 blade prop on it...would have to check the pitch. With just me and a light tank of gas I can get about 53 mph (GPS) at 6k rpm. With 2 guys, full tank of gas, lots of gear I usually top out at about 51 mph.

I've got a Trophy Plus 21 pitch 4 blade on my 618. I'd definitely be interested in ideas for something faster. By myself loaded pretty good and with plenty of gas I get about 46 only. This is with a 135 opti. If I really work the trim I can get to about 5600 rpm. I also don't feel like the boat gets out of the hole real well either.

618s with 150 2 strokes propped right should definitely be hitting 55+
I would not doubt a 618 propped right with a 150 opti or etec could clip 60 mph....your rig w that ficht should def be running a lot faster propped right...

Exactly what I'm thinking! 45 mph max trimmed WTO.. 135 Hp's are beating me

On my 618 the best I ever saw was 54 with myself, musky gear and 3/4 gas with a 4-stroke 150 Suzuki.
If your only getting 45 maybe there is something wrong with the motor?? Got clean plugs? Have you had the motor looked at? I have heard of them pushing 60 mph with a 2-stroke before.

The previous owner had it to the shop before I picked it up and everything checked out. Im thinking it was the grinding on the prop.

Hiya,

The prop looks fine, but you can tell it has been reworked. The big thing I am seeing are how big the ears are... Wide, which tells me it is more of a prop for handling than for speed. From just that picture I think there are other props to try that might get you a bit more out of the motor...

Will increasing pitch increase my trolling speed? It is 3.7 MPH right now and don't want to go any faster than that at idle really. Family likes to troll for pike now and then

150 suzuki 14 7/8x25 4 blade with a light load will get you 54.5 @ 6200rpms normal load 52. Really like the 4 blade jumps on plane with little effort and keeps the boat on plane at slower speeds.

I have the identical boat... 618vs with a 150 fict. I can get it into the low 50's with a four blade prop. The boat runs and handles very well. Not sure what pitch the prop is. I'll check it out this weekend.
