Has anyone heard when these will be available? I haven't seen them in a store or online since I started looking last fall and I was told at the MN Musky expo that Joe Bucher was having trouble with the production of these. What kind of issue could they be having that allows them to put out other top raiders in different color patterns but not the baby loon one?

Try Rollie and Helen's,Thornes both have it listed. try one of the "big" sporting goods places like Bass Pro,cabels'a,Gander Mtn or even Scheels. There are a couple more options, put a WTB add in the buy/sell forum or you could have someone from this site paint one for you.

None available anywhere that I know of. Baby Loon has been on backorder since sometime last year. Buy a blackbird or black widow and paint some white spots on the back if it gives you more confidence.

I agree with Peter S. --- buy a TopRaider ,,, give it a light sanding ,,, paint it black with a small brush (the muskies dont care if it was brushed or sprayed) ,,, use the end of a "Q-Tip" to paint the white spots (if the spots give you more confidence) --- -- I personally paint mine with a black bottom so the fish can see its silouette and the top of the lure yellow so I can see it ------- jimjimjim

This will only be my second year musky fishing so perhaps I'm missing something. When you say if it makes me more confident, having the white dots, are you saying that they don't really matter? Aren't I trying to present as realistic of an appearance to them as possible? I already have a black/orange coot top raiders so is there no reason to get the baby loon or any other color?

Yes. First off, baby loons are brown, not back with white spots. Second, the spots are on the top of the bait and muskies see the bottom since it is top water. So no, the color pattern doesn't matter. its a black silhouette that they see, not a loon.

Welcome to the addiciton. No, color doesn't matter 'much'. And a fish doesn't see a baby loon colored topraider and think, 'hey, there goes a baby loon, I should eat it'. Doug Johnson's often-repeated saying "if it moves, it's food" sums it up best.

So is it worth getting any of the other colors or once I have 1 top raider that's all I need?

I guess you could get one dark and one bright color. Not necessary though. If you watch joe buchers show, he uses ones that are sent back because of defects regardless of color and catches fish all the time.

I'd get a black one and a bright one. Bright one for sunny bright days the black one for everything else. Good luck!

But baby loons feet do spin circles around their body as the torpedo acrossed the surface.

Almost always sound/action trumps color. I use a white one. Why? cause I can see it. I have limited vision and black is hard for me to see. I also swap out the tiny 5/0 hooks to 7/0s. If you do this make sure the tail hook is on with two tines down and one up.

I use the gold/ red one that now has almost half the paint worn off from teeth, use, etc. The sound is much more important I guess you could get a black one if you want more of a silhoutte but not that big a deal.

So if its about sound/action should I really get another top raider or should I look at a different top water lure that might have a different sound?

Only the fish know for sure. If I knew those answers I'd be a famous guide.

I'd stick with the Top Raider you have and add a Hawg Wobbler to your arsenal if you don't have one.

Last year I had 1 top water lure, that was black with orange dots top raider. In the off season I picked up a Perch Arbogast XL Jitterbug, Tackle Industries Glow Kraken Creeper (loon pattern when not glowing), and a Tackle Industires Perch Firetiger Hairy Plopper. So I don't know if I actually need anymore top water baits, but they are my favorite to buy. Since I don't really need to get the baby loon anymore I was thinking maybe the Rainbow Trout or Baby Mallard Super Top Raider and then focus on other types of baits.

Round out your topwater arsenal with a walk the dog presentation. I like a black weagle, actually color name is "cash". Then you'll have all topwater bases covered.

Just buy another one, its cheap enough and you will then have a back up.. this isnt life or death.
