Ten men from northern Minnesota have been indicted for allegedly netting walleyes and other fish from lakes on the Red Lake and Leech Lake Indian reservations and reselling them.hopefully they don't get off with a slap on the hand.

If you think to yourself how do these restaurants across the country up here have these big walleye fish fries and alot of these are real walleye mind you, it makes you think isnt this illegal. Isnt it illegall for restaurants to buy from natives and I doubt white man would have a commercial license to net out there so tell me how do these restaurants get all of these walleyes??? These 10 guys have it coming for sure but there alot more people to blame out there than just them. I myself will not eat the walleys at the restaurants around here just because I feel like I would be to blame as well for supporting this. If we quit buying the real walleye dinners at the restaurants they would quit buying them from those that net, wether they are legally netting or illegally netting!

Interesting, I was always of the mindset of catch & release only and when I wanted a Walleye dinner go out to a local fish fry. This sure put's a new twist to that thinking..... Ok, I hate cleaning fish and will release em all anyway. Poor mans lobster at the pine tree supper club.. Yum Yum!

Coming from a cooking background we never had walleye from anywhere but Canada. I am not saying this is OK in any instance but I feel the majority of those fish frys are supplied from stocked ponds or in Canada.

Interesting. My post isn't to start a war about the tribes or anything. Just curiosity as I couldn't find out if it was tribe members or not in the info.

From what I have found out, both. Now we know the story behind the images one particular person was whining about us not publishing last Spring. We didn't because no one knew the actual story behind the images and we could not get any real information about the images...probably because an investigation was underway. It was 100% the tribes who were being accused. Buyer or seller, white or Native American or any nationality or origin... I hope they throw the book at them hard enough to knock 'em over.

Sickening enough they break the law and rape the fisheries, but even more so throwing away the other fish.

I agree there. These types of actions shouldn't be tolerated by racial group. If I would venture to guess there are likely some pretty upset tribal members over this as well.

Perhaps the white man and the tribes could use this as some common ground and begin a new relationship...I wont hold my breath though.

I think there are 31 people being charged. Says 21 individuals with state charges, and 10 others with federal. FAQ reads like this too.

You have to cut the head off the market, and I'm hoping you end the source. Love to see the buyers get crushed

If you get rid of the drug users/walleye eaters, there will be no demand for the suppliers. GoodLuck!!!!!!!!

So I just hit up Google to see how I could get fresh walleye if I were a restaurant owner. The only place that I found that sold direct from commercial netting in Canada sold them frozen (not fresh) at a rate of $170 plus shipping for 11 pounds of fillets. Are you kidding me? How in the hell is ANY restaurant selling all-you-can-eat walleye on Fridays for $11.99 or whatever? I know for a fact that I can eat a pound of walleyes myself and I'm a 170 pound wuss.

Restaurants don't buy through google, nor do they pay a consumer price.

You may also be eating a different white fish than walleye, these places need to keep their doors open

I know...which is why I did it as if I were a restaurant owner trying to find a reputable company to buy from. There is another company that I found, and their fillet prices for restaurant delivery were $7 Canadian dollars per pound plus shipping with a 50 pound minimum order.

Restaurant owners don't use the internet...I guess you learn something new everyday.

A good restaurant owner doesn't buy a product solely based on price. Thus, a good restaurant owner doesn't just google "cheap walleye".

Of course they use the internet, but simply doing a search like you are doing isn't going to get you vary far.

Also, a good portion of the "walleye" you are eating is zander.

Why would I Google "cheap walleye?" Its the opposite of where I was going with it. My point is this...serving walleye bought from a reputable dealer is very expensive. Between $7-$15 per pound plus shipping as a frozen product. Therefore, the idea of almost any small town restaurant having their "real walleye" fish fry seems unreasonable because you would lose money on it.

And yeah, I think the percentage that is zander is probably very high. I heard a similar thing with ocean fish used for sushi...mislabeled a huge percentage of the time.

This may not be the answer as to all you can eat walleye but there used to be a mom & pop restaurant near my company the served walleye every Friday for 4.95, I always said it cant be walleye at that price espcecially for how many people they served. I asked the owner once about this and he said it was Alaskan Walleye. google defines Alaskan Walleye as Pollock.

Culvers gets theirs from commercial netters in Lake Winnpeg. The local place I eat fish sells a walleye basket for lunch but will readily tell you it's pollack. Theye also sell "fresh" Canadian walleye for about $17.00 per pound. years ago there used to be a restruant in Bemidji that advertised fresh Red Lake Walleye. I don't think they are in business anymore That was before Red Lake was closed to fishing.

I recenly came back from San Francisco on a business trip where I had the chance to eat a lot of totally good seafood. I was back home a few days later at a bar in Meno. Falls for lunch when the bartender (cute one too) say's the special is Crab Salad. I said, "That's for me!" Afterward, I called her over to say that I was pretty sure that was FAKE crab. "Of course it's fake sweety," she replied. "Do you have any idea what it costs to buy real crab?" Then she added, "Hey, you're kidding aren't you...you really didn't think you were going to get REAL crab?"
