Subject: opinions on Luna 253

Thought I'd get some opinions on some choices of reels I'm looking to get. I'm wanting to get a Calcutta 400D, but that will have to be next year (unless someone on here has one to sell at a decent price ) , so I'm going to go with a mid-ranged dollar reel. I have a revo toro in 5:4:1, but was looking at the Luna 253 because of the smoothness and the 5:1:1 ratio. I don't throw double 10's much, but want to be able to do so for short stints if necessary without wearing my arms out. Also, want to burn 8's without too much effort. I also looked at the Isis 400, but was thinking that the Luna might be a little smoother and easier to palm. Any insight would be most helpful. thanks

I'm with muskyhunter47. I know this sport can get expensive but when it comes to a reel you defiantly get what you pay for. I am also a Shimano guy and would suggest a 400 b, 400 d, or a used 400 TE. You won't regret any of those decisions.

I have Luna 300's and a 253. I have never had an issue with any of them. I use them for bucktails and straight cranking only as they do not have anti reverse "Stops" in them. Bearings only. I have, on occasion tossed DD10's with them but like everyone else said there are better reels for that application. I would not be afraid to get one. Very nice reel.

I definitely hear what you guys are saying. I usually spend alot of money on quality first, so I don't have to spend alot in the long run on cheap stuff. I just figured the Luna is definitely quality and I can get it for around $200 and the isis 400 seems to get good reviews and I can get one on ebay for $144 right now.

Go with the 400b if you ever want to use the reel for any jerk baits. If your going just strait retrieve then the Luna is great.

I recommend the Zebco 808....you're not going to catch any fish of significant size this year anyway so you should be fine. LOL.

I have a couple old Millionaire CVX-253a's. They are a less refined Luna and are tough. I believe they are now 10-11 years old. I have replaced the handles (my fault) and drag washers on both of them. I think I replaced the roller bearing in 1 of them. Not bad for a lot of abuse.
