I wrote some software to work with HB recording files to make tracks and waypoints and figured I would share it. You can read more and download from:

http://webpages.charter.net/mcuster/maptools/

now I just need to wait for the ice to go so I can scout some lakes and make recordings.

Looks interesting, but can you help me out. What does this program do that I can't do in Humminbird PC? Do tracks actually show up on your side imaging when you are out on the water?

No - tracks will not show up on your SI when you are on the water, only on the map. The idea of the program is that on the water you drive along some feature while recording load that recording into the program and then trace along the weed edge or bottom transition or whatever you were following. You can then export that as a track.

If you were just trying to make that track correctly while out on the water you'd need to be able to drive exactly on top of whatever edge you were trying to follow which is more or less impossible. This way you only need to be able to stay close enough to the feature to keep it on the SI screen while you're driving which is pretty easy.

You could use the SI with the arrow keys to drop wayoints while driving on the water, but your screen stops while you do which makes it harder to keep following the edge plus you can use up a lot of waypoints marking edges that way. The HB units support up to 1,000,000 points in tracks but only 3000 as waypoints.

HumminbirdPC doesn't do anything with the recording files it just to import the gps data you made on the water (or some other program) and send it back to the unit.
