Posts: 192 | I have a 14 foot aluminum boat with a 35hp motor and was wondering how many pounds of thrust i would need. I would be fishing both rivers and lakes

Posts: 242 | I have a 14 ft. Crestliner with a 40 hp motor (sounds like it is very close in size to yours) and last year I put on it an 80 lb. Thrust Monn Kota Terrova. I was afraid it would be too much trolling motor for my boat, but it was the best decision I have ever made! I had it running against 20 mph winds all day one outing and it still had half battery power left when I got off the water. On setting 10, it gets my boat up to almost 3 mph. My advice would be to get as large of trolling motor as you can afford and fit on your boat. That is one purchase you won't regret. Edited by Lucky Craft Man 3/17/2013 11:02 PM

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I agree I have an early 60s 14'er with a 25 horse. I put the 80# terrova i-pilot on it several years ago and it is awesome. For rivers or lakes when the wind is going you will have plenty of power and the battery life is amazing. My boat must be a little lighter because on the lake the terrova will pull me along at 4.3 mph on 10. You may not always need that much power but it's nice to have it there when you do.

Posts: 87 | i have a 55# minn kota power drive and that pulls my boat all day i love it. but if you could afford a bigger motor like an 80# terrova with i pilot you could switch that motor to a lot of bigger boats in the future.

Posts: 397 | A power drive 55 will be more than enough for that boat. had one for years and it is a great motor with good battery life

Posts: 173 Location: Green Bay, Titletown, WI | I had a minnkota PD55 on my last 14'er. It was plenty of power. It would move me in strong currents and wind with no problem. If I can remember right, i could get 2.7 mph out of it. Like everyone else has said, there is no such thing as too much power. But do remember that once you get into 24v trolling motors, that's another 30-40 lbs in a second battery, and possibly battery storage problems. I had a 15 horse on mine so I wouldn't want to add anymore weight than necessary. If weight and space aren't an issue, go as big as you can afford.
