How wealthy are you? If you have unlimited financial resources, and you want to, buy as many as you like. But you may feel like a fool later. If you aren't that wealthy, stop and consider whether you need more than you have. If you can't call yourself a rich dude, you might consider these points of direction:
1. Don't buy anything that isn't a proven taker of fish;
2. Don't buy the same bait in more than three different colors;
3. Don't buy any lure that you won't use regularly, you probably don't need it;
4. Don't buy anything (for recreational use) until you're sure all your financial responsibilities and future necessities are covered.

Al, "FishingFool" is not the Paul we befriended at Cass. At least I don't think so. Our old pal Paul slid to the side years ago, like many masters who quietly go their own way.

Paul.....I took him out at Cass and that was the first time I ever had a guest bring a tacklebox that took up ALL the room in the center of my humble 14' boat. He smoked cigs but didn't in the room at his house where he stores his baits. He has less than zero tolerance for a drunk flashing a big white ass in his face in the middle of the night; Thick Shady was lucky to not have that big white ass beaten down that night. Don't ask about his tats. In fact, don't ask him about anything. That's Paul, original Fishingfool.

The Swan: I am far from rich! I live rather cheap,no truck payment,my bills are low and don't waste money on excessive things like the newest smart phone,fancy clothes or shoes. I am a bachelor,have been my entire life,no plans to change either!No kids or child support just a big old fat dog that I got from the pound a few years ago. So my prioity is my passion,musky fishing and musky lures. While I do have a ratherlarge collection to the average fisherman it by no means a "huge" collection. I might have over 100 of one lure,( 10" Jake), but only a few of others. I used to go to many musky shows and get some good deals and show colors,now I attend one or 2. You can find deals on the internet and at sports shops. I have collected hundreds of lures that way... It don't take long to get 1000 if you get em cheap!
One other thing,a guide friend of mine once said,"it is better to have 10 lures and know how to use them than 100 you don't know how to use". Not to hard to work a glider, double 10, Bull Dawg top water,or a crank bait. Now but em for 20+ years and you have a "nice" collection of lures! Enough said!

toooo many....I think over 500.. maybe over 600... but the older and more experienced I get it seems I end up using less and less each year.... It's fun to have lots of shiny lures but look at how many lures most of us have then look at each lure and ask yourself if you've caught one fish on it...every couple winters i go thru my lures and if it hasn't hit the water in a few years or caught a fish it may hit the buy / sell board... ; ) guys complain about an $8 sucker but have 100s of $20 lures that may never put a fish in the net for them....kinda funny to me... ; )

Sounds very responsible but it's difficult when emotion is involved.

I actually don't have that many muskie lures. I have a small selection of cranks, gliders, a few topwaters, a handful of plastics, and some bucktails. I don't know if I have much more than 100 lures. Of those, I use about 10 consistently. I have confidence is a few, and that's what I throw. I tend to invest my $$$ in other gear.

I would have to say well over 1000. I would have to say over half are the big wooden trolling baits from everywhere I can find. a lot of topwater baits that I've been collecting for 20 some years. I guess I don't even hardly count any of the bucktails and stuff that just hang in there. sad every year go to musky shows always wind up with probably 100 baits by the end of the show season. And then there is summertime, always find a pattern or color i just need to get! Probably pushing 2000, pretty sad. Good thing the wife loves to muskie fish with me. I always try to tell her this stuff is for you to!:-)

I sold about 150 hard baits and bucktails over the last two years to trim the herd.. I typically only throw a handful of baits, but I like to have those "place & time" baits, too, and for dark or clear water. My rubber collection isn't as bad as Spencer's, but it's getting pretty ridiculous. I probably have in the neighborhood of 300 or so, still.

33 lures here. I - like byteme90k - also keep track with a spreadsheet. It does not seem like much after seeing Spencers collection of rubber. Main difference is that he fishes 275 days per year and I about 7-14. Althought it sometimes seems like fun to have such a huge collection, I will keep my apartment and two tackle boxes well organized and hope for warm weather to be able to use them soon.
