I have never fished in Minnesota--wish I could. But if I was going there in June I would use spring tactics. That is, smaller crankbaits and bucktails. I would want my 5.5" Wiley lures; 6" Jakes; 6" Believers; and 6" Depthraiders. For bucktails I would throw the regular Mepps Muskie Killer and Giant Killer and maybe Windel's (?) Harasser. I would also have some modest sized topwater lures. Good luck.

shallow invaders
big game surface twitchers
hellpuppies
smaller walk-the-dog topwaters; seems in june when the fish are slow and won't show themselves these always bring them out from hiding.

When in June? The water temps can change dramatically that time of year.from opener to the end of the month.

^^+1 I didn't catch one, but all 6 follows in mid June occurred on these 3 lures. They just wouldn't bite!

Maybe our minds are great, but so far I suck at musky fishing! I spent about 4 hours a day for 5 days fishing the V last year, first time fishing musky, and was skunked. Granted, I was/am still new and didn't know jack and wasted a lot of time on spots. An additional 3 days with a friend who guides and also and got skunked too. His feeling is that June is hit or miss, but there were fish being caught on the lake, just not be me or us.

I have caught and have seen muskies caught in june on, DCG -10s, showgirls, depth raiders, topraiders, hogwobblers, jakes, jackpots, and phantoms. I'm sure many other baits work. Mostly depends on conditions and water temps. I caught my 1st musky over 40 inches on a cowgirl 6 years ago on opener! That was before it was burned into my brain that you need to use smaller baits early in the year

Vermilion can be tough. It's one of my favorite lakes, but it can be streaky. I've got other places I like spending time that have similar trophy potential with more consistent action. Let me know if you're ever up this way and we can try to hook up.

That same thing was burned into my head as well, up until last season when I would see nothing on anything small. So for sits and giggles I took out a DBL13 and here come the fish. Try to go back to smaller stuff and nothing, back to big or even huge stuff and was getting bit or followed hot.

It is no longer burned into my brain, it is all situational to me. Small fish are not scared of large lures hence 30inchers being caught on pounders. IMO, it depends on the lake and the situation, The only theory's I will bank on is solunar phases and weather. Personally I don't believe that the fish always wants small in spring and large in fall.

two years ago I was trolling 12" jerk baits and my wife had a 3 1/2" rattle trap and caught a 45" and I caught nothing, right at the beginning of October. Makes no sense at all, then I thought about it. Musky are like woman, the only way to understand them is to take it day by day, and minute by minute. you can't determine how either one will react based on the day before or the next day. You just have to roll with the punches and take whatever info they are willing to give in that moment.

Classic! I think you have a new signature!

ammoman16, I will be up there from June 30th to July 14th for sure. I have a cabin and boat rented on Vermillion form July 6-13 and will be fishing solo pretty much. So, if you want to come up we can work that out. Always fun to meet new people. You just have to be OK with sharing a boat with my dog, 9 year old golden retriever.

Water temps are in the high 60s/low 70s a lot of years in June and fish could already be getting into their summer pattern.

Bucktails, cranks, dawgs, topwater, or whatever they're chasing. Really depends on what kind of june we have this year. Can never go wrong with bucktails though.

All I know is I plan to troll a lot more in June this year. What bait will be my favorite remains to be seen.
